Default Chronic Cough

As I've stated before, the group on this forum has more consolidated knowledge than any where else that I know of. Now that I've buttered you up - anyone have any experience with chronic coughing? Not a cold! Have had it for almost a year. Cough can start at any time and lasts an hour or two. Never smoked. Yes I've gone to: Pulmonologist, ear nose and throat, gastro-intestinal, and general internist. I've had all possible tests and am probably going for round two of testing. I've got to get this properly diagnosed and solved before Obamacare takes hold. C'mon guys and girls; a little help here......please!

Ok, if the turkey & honey doesn't help...
Does this happen everywhere you go?
All weather conditions?

What I am thinking of is some type of allergen from ventilation systems, or dry air, wet air, just some type of environmental trigger.

Do you work in an old building with a screwed up air handling system, ie never changing filters?

I am sure you had a full work up, which would include a GOOD QUALITY CT scan of the chest. Xray is not enough.

Could be gastric reflux if all else negative. Notice if it is worse after a large meal, lifting heavy objects, wearing a tight belt, or when you lie down. Try taking prilosec for a 10 days and eating smaller meals. This is over the counter. Read label about side effects carefully. Fairly common cause of the symptoms you describe. Your docs may have already done this.

See your doc and continue your workup to make sure it is not something bad. Be well

Dry or wet cough? Going from prone to standing, does that start the coughing? I have a bad sinus condition, OK laying down/sleeping, but when I stand it all drains down and I cough it up. Mostly allergies that the docs cannot pinpoint.

This may or may not be relevant but.....

My sisters family bought a nice new home on a golf course only to have to sell it after 3 years because the kids were alergic to the carpets, building materials or something else that was in the house. They decided to move when they checked for mold and it came up negative, they had no idea what was causing it. They spent about the same cost of the house on special building materials, hardwood floors everywhere, special materials on furniture and everything.

They moved into the new house and everything has been fine since. They still have some allergies but kind of normal now. About a year after they moved, they went to a holiday party at one of their old neighbors houses. Next door to their previous house. During the party, the kids said they didn't feel well and as they mulled around, noticed almost everyone else there, had a slight cough. Figured it was flu season, no biggie. A little while later, they went back to another old neigbors house for another party. noticed the same cronic cough with everyone. No one seemed to notice that they even had it, they were so used to it. Once my sisters family leaves the area, all is good.

Turns out the neighborhood was build on basically a swampy area of the gold course they werent using. It was mold, or something like it that was coming from the land that gave them all allergic reactions and symptoms. So slow and minor that no one really noticed how bad they were until they were not exposed to it for a long time. The neighborhood was tested and apparently a lot of possible causes were found. Some houses have been abandoned but most peopel still live there. The ones that tried to sell couldn't since the problem was made public record. These houses were in the are of a 500k. A few got sold for less than half, others culd not even get that.

Check you home or office for mold. HVAC sytems are notorious, standing water in french drains, sump pumps, flat roof tops can all be the home of bacteria and mold.

You live in both NJ and Virginia? Is there any change when you go from one place to the other? Are both places on the water or near water? How similar ( or not) are the environments you live in?

Have you tried taking an antihistamine? I would try something like Advil Cold/Sinus for a day or two. If your cough goes away you have post nasal drip which is commonly caused by an allergy. If this works for you then have the task of figuring out what is causing your histamine reaction. You are best served visiting with a physician.

I would look for a mold source -car, house or workplace. Try to set out your attacks in more detail. Where were you 12 hours before the attack - is there any common ground?

The posted text was deleted by Mod 4 because it was a political derailing of the thread.

X2......there is a LOT of different causes that can be coming up and through from the basement floor!

Very common complaint these days. Lots of abnormal microorganisms with even small climate changes. But, have you taken any new medications the last year - this is the usual cause - drove me nuts till I related it to a blood pressure medicine I was on - stopped taking it and cough went away.

PS I would not worry about Obama care - all versions being considered have been basically reduced to an expansion of the current private insurance based program.

If you are taking a blood pressure regulator you may want to have your MD change the scrip as some of the meds will cause a constant cough. Two people I know had this problem cause by the drug, one of them is an MD.

Someone I know had a chronic cough that was the result of
a nodule on his vocal cords. He had to get an operation, they knocked him
out and lasered it out!

I get a cough sometimes if I am a little dehydrated. I have a glass or two of water, and it goes away.

Thanks for all the replies. Failed to mention that I had sinus surgery this past July and then moved out of state. The initial follow up by the performing surgeon (3 visits) was "problem solved". Currently after many tests, x-rays and CT scans the problem has finally (I hope) been solved--chronic inflamation of the sinus'.Came across a great gastro doc and Pulmonary doc. Both conferred and after CT scan came to that conclusion. I don't know when the chronic inflamation developed, but I am happy it was found. Spray antihistamine and spray steroid for the past 2 weeks has solved the cough. Thanks again for suggestions and guidance. Problem solved; I hope!
