We have 2 - $99. HP 1040 fax machines, one in our office and one in our shop. I just purchased the 1 inch x 2 inch black ink cartirdges at Staples for $38.99 per cartridge. For the price of 2 cartridges I could almost buy a new machine. Any have any luck with any refill systems on these HP cartridges?
I had the same concerns, which included my printer. I gave my two units away once they ran out of ink and bought lazer......problem solved! I should have done it years earlier.
I never refilled ink carttridges but I have refilled toner...it's messy but $$ worth it. I don't think refilled ink is worth it though...especially with the electronic monitoring HP carts have.
Do all of your faxes need to be printed? If not efaxing (via email) is great.
As far as printers go Kodak just came up with a big FU to all the printer companies by designing their new series to use $ 10-$ 15 cartridges. You could receive via email and only print what you need.
One thing I've learned is that the cartridges still have ink in them when the "low ink" indicator light comes on. My light has been on for a long time trying to tell me the black is almost empty.
I bought one of the Kodaks for myself and one for my dad.
They are a bit noisy to run but the cartridges are about $22 for both the B&W and color. The photos are truly lab quality and the printer is efficient with ink for photos, which is what Kodak is best at. However I am not convinced the cartridges last as long if doing a lot of actual text printing.
I have been refilling my hp cartridges for about a year. I bought the refill kit from atlantic inkjet . com .Works fine for the black I have not done any color. I turn the color off on my printers unless it really has to be color. I am refilling the cartridge #98. I end up refilling the one at work about once a week. The cartridges do wear out after a time so keep a new one handy. Really easy to refill. real easy to make a mess also. It is really cheap to refill.
My cartridges are no longer commonly stocked items - Epson Stylus Photo 1280, taking the T007 and T009. Used to be, the black was about $25 and the 5-color was $32. Now I can't find them on the shelf, but they are available online. But when you really need one...
Fortunately, I have about six empties saved and I am about to go the refilled route.
HP has another interesting trick. Each time I go to print, I get a warning that says my cartridge has expired! Not that it is empty, but that it is too old. Just another way to keep the refill kits from selling.
Hp and other companies don't make any money on their low end printers. They make their money on ink. One of our large format digital printers at work was 400K, however a gallon of ink is $2100.00

get an efax number, used to be free but you get an out of state number. Anyway I think they are only $19 a month. www.efax.com
I use efax for all my incoming faxes at work. They arrive as PDF email attachments. This allows me to save them, print them on a laser or delete them. Cost is $19/month. Because of the way they charge, I use an older Brother fax to send, which does not use toner.
If you are shopping for cartridges online, enter the number on pricegrabber.com, and you will get a list of online seller prices. Newegg.com, Buy.com usually have good prices.

it's a classic 'give 'em the razor, sell 'em the razorblade' scam!

ink prices are ridiculous!!!
Agreed. Color inkjets used to cost $500 and the ink was $25. Now they cost $25 and the ink is $50. The other catch is that the stuff really does go bad, clog, evaporate, etc.
If you print more than a few dozen pages a month (and you don't need photo capabilities) get a laser. Same thing is happening to some extent there on the lower end of the market and "1000 page" toner carts, but you should be able to pick up a good laser for $100-$150 or so, or if you shop hard a color laser for $200-350 and not have to open it up for at least a year. I bought a monster Dell color laser 3 years ago and just had to replace the black toner - $39.
HP has done a fantastic job marketing their wares.
They are basically giving away the hardware and sticking it to the consumer for the consumables.
Yup. Printer and ink are like shaving razors and blades, or tooth brushes and tooth paste -- give away the holder and you can sell an endless supply of the consumables.
