sealing a driveway will increase its life and it looks better. Be wary of sealcoat contractors, get someone reputable. Some will water the sealer down and you will have a mess. Highways are not sealed but the material used is differant than that used for a driveway. Seal coating mainly protects from the suns UV rays.

I did mine a couple years ago. It is messy and I spent most of my time in prep work. Under the car port there were old oil stains and I scrubbed with detergent and hit it with a pressure washer as best I could. You can never get that oil up. I then filled all cracks and sealed it. The actual sealing was the least time consuming. I used the 12 year stuff from Lowes. I don't know if it is good or bad for the driveway but it sure does look better. It is probably 15 + years old and had never been sealed.
