Random Quote: If my hull is 25'6" and I have a bow pulpit and engine bracket, does that mean I have a 29 Abaco?
What are you kidding me......do you tip the fireman when he puts a fire out too!!! hvac guys are paid well, don't worry.......if you do feel guilty send the tip to me.
Never had a fireman put out a fire, but if he saved my house and/or family, he would probably get a really large tip and a yearly Christmas present from my household.
We just had our air conditioner serviced. Do you guys normally tip the repairman when you have the air or heat worked on in your house?
I don't tip repair contractors, but there's nothing wrong with it. I do offer sodas, and refreshments if they are so inclined. It is a hot sweaty job.
If I feel they have provided an extra service I ask them if they wish compensation for it, and how much. Sometimes plumbers/electricians/HVAC and other repair folks add value to their visit.
I think the most important thing any of them would wish for is knowledge they will be invited back, and that you will refer them to others. These days, that's music to everyone's ears.
You tip people who make there money from tips. Or if you have someone do a job for next to nothing as a favor or recieved something maybe for pennies on the doallar . You don't( in general) tip people like firemen , police, electricians or even higher paid people. Most guys at the gas station aren't even making what retired firemen and cops make for walking out to the mail box. So tipping the guy who changes your oil might be well worth 5 or 10 bucks every now and then!

here in jersey it is majority volunteer fire, you bet your a$$ if they save my house there getting a donation. especially coming from a family of double lifers(over 40 yrs) and founding fathers, they dont ask for anything but its nice to show your appreciation for their risk on your property and/or life.
I would be pissed if one of my techs accepted a tip from a customer and if I proved it I would ask for the tech to return it. Pay for the call. Repair men get tips.. it is called a bonus- Fewer the call backs better the bonus. LC

I tipped a Fireman. Tipped the whole department. Hurricane Floyd layed 18, 90 foot trees down over my 1000 foot drive back to the main road. Only way in and only way out. They came in that afternoon with a big cat front end loader and took 5 guys with chain saws and myself 3 hours to clear the drive. $200.00 dollars left my pocket real quick and a hundred goes in the kitty twice a year at the BBQ plate dinners. As to the AC guy, that ones up to you but you have already paid them as stated a high price for there service. A Tip is a thank you. The amount is not important but it always depends on your own feeling towards what its for. Its never wrong or never right. Its a choise. Can't get much easier then that.

I work in the trade and none of us expect to be tipped, although it does happen. Tipping is definately not the norm. When I have been tipped in the past it was usually a late night call or somebody that had been taken for a ride in the past.
I usually go a little beyond what most people expect from a technician though.
I just had the capacitor replaced in my A/C..... the guy stood there after I paid the bill and signed the paperwork.... I thought maybe he was waiting for a tip.... which I wasn't prepared to give with the hefty bill I just paid and the 20 minutes he was there. I said "thank you" and that was that. I wondered if I was supposed to tip.... but it just doesn't seem like a job I should tip for. I also don't tip the guy who services the washer, dryer or TV either.
So put me down for a NO on the tipping the A/C guy.
You need to draw the line somewhere, I was always told that you tip for personal service, haircut, food service, limo/taxi driver, first mate on a charter, etc.......
Cold drinks, water, maybe snacks, but ain't no way no how I am going to tip a repair man.
Don't we have enough of these TIP---ing threads.
Donation to the volunteer FD is not a TIP.
I agree. I always appreciate it if the customer offers water when I'm working at their house.
Funny this thread came up, though. Someone gave me a $20 tip yesterday! I told them it wasn't necessary, but they insisted. What the hell, I took it.
