Random Quote: Who dat! Say who dat! When I say who dat!
I just had the capacitor replaced in my A/C..... the guy stood there after I paid the bill and signed the paperwork.... I thought maybe he was waiting for a tip.... which I wasn't prepared to give with the hefty bill I just paid and the 20 minutes he was there. I said "thank you" and that was that. I wondered if I was supposed to tip.... but it just doesn't seem like a job I should tip for. I also don't tip the guy who services the washer, dryer or TV either.
So put me down for a NO on the tipping the A/C guy.
That is why I asked. I never tip for that type of service but it got me wondering if other people did since the dude kind of stood around like you witnessed. Anyhow, I was kind of surprised buy some of the emotional responses.
I'm a cheap tipper in general but I'll give a repair guy etc who comes out on time, does the job he's supposed to do, and doesn't screw me, a $10 or $20 if I have one on me, or a case of beer to take back to the shop if it's his last call of the day. I'll do the same for the FPL guy or cable guy if they go "above and beyond" which sometimes just means not being completely incompetant compared to their peers.
Sad to say that doesn't always guarantee great repeat service, but sometimes it pays off, and I figure for some of the crap they must have to deal with for customers, should be a decent change to their day... Hey I'd be happy if somebody tipped ME $10 every once in a while. (not that I deal with customers, lol)
Have been in construction for 35 years albeit commercial construction. I do some side work for friends and some strangers.
If it's going to be hot out, I'll will have prepared for it and bring my own water so I'll thank them and say no thanks.
If I get some one to do something I can't do at the house, and it is hot out and they don't have something to drink with them, I look at them as unprepared.
If I am charging them for the job, no way will I take a tip.
I always go above and beyond what the customer expects, act professional, dress professional, clean up everything better than I found it, etc etc... My reputation is more important then a tip.
Unless you know exactly how to do the job yourself, how do you know the job was done correctly and will last. How much of a chump would you feel like if you tipped them then they left and the trouble started again? Then you got a different tech to come fix the issue when you called to complain. Would you tip them also?
People that rely on tips as a major part of their income, no problem, I tip higher then what is expected for good service.
"If I am charging them for the job, no way will I take a tip".
In the "service Industry" is offensive to refuse any gratuity...
if you refuse a gratuity from me, I will never call you back
for service, you refuse my good gesture...
If you refuse money from "Tony Soprano", a mafioso,
they will get real offended and might "whack you" over the offense...
I will give 10/ 20 doll on ocassion for the guy to have a beer on me.
Waiters some times add 15 percent to the bill, so they are charging for the job also,
and if service was great I will add a extra 5/10 doll, sometimes more on top of the 15 percent,
How do you feel if you go to a restaurant with a party of 6 people, By restaurant "rule"
the waiter adds 15 percent, you add 10/20 doll more,
and the waiter returns the money to you?

When I'm offered a tip, I always so ",thank you , but that's not necessary.". If they offer again, then I'm not so adamant about not accepting it, If they "insist", well, then I accept, with a thank you!! For LooseConnection..... Many people will "steal" hours of your time AND the time of your employees asking for additional work (hoping for a very minimal charge, if at all) or playing 64 thousand questions... . That's lost time you or your employees can't get back and inhibits yours and their productivity... If someone desires to show their appreciation with a tip, presumibly for doing good work, more power to them. Why get piss'd?? Ever been to a restrauant where everyone pools their tips? Everyone's motivation is questionable 'cause the good workers who go the extra mile get paid the same as the slackers who do squat!! The people who go out of their way to do a good job, are pleasant, blah, blah..... should reap the rewards if any, when they do come around. And They don't always come around!!!! So if someone desires to show appreciation to the hvac guy... hopefully, that customer will get remember'd, will get good service in the future and recommend that business to his friends. It works both ways.
I normally tip good at restaurants. However, if I look on the bill and it says that gratuity is included. I only give the amount they included and I inform the waiter that he/she would have gotten a much better tip if it wasn't forced upon me. The required gratuity has always pissed me off.
usually i tip the fule dock person waiters and waitres's bar tenders ... hvac people are usually going to put a hurting on the old butt hole so no i wouldnt tip
We were in Sao Paulo a few years ago on the club level of the hotel. A beautiful girl was serving us scotch, which was free on that floor so we were all feeling generous. Plus she was really catering to us. The next morning I was telling my colleagues how much I was tipping her every time she brought a drink. Come to find out, they were all doing the same. We probably paid for her house payment for 6 months.
