Default remodeling questions

My mom is purchasing a home that was built in the mid 80's.She wants to replace the cabinet doors and drawer fronts with a raised panel doors to update the look. The cabinets are in good shape so the plan is to sand and paint them.Where would be the best place to find paint grade replacement doors? She also wants to paint all of the trim which is now stained. What is the best way to prep and paint?I thought about retrimming the house with preprimed because I hate sanding, but I am trying to do this within her budget. Thanks for any help.

check for local companies that do custom cabinets as you should be able to order just the doors and door fronts from them or one of therre suppliers.
on the trim you can use a deglosser before priming the trim and painting

If the cabs are made out of pine you really need to sand them down and then apply a good primer. When I did mine I sanded down the cabs then sprayed with primer. Now all the defect will stand out and I filled them with bondo and sanded. I sprayed all the cabs again with primer and checked for decfects and fixed anything that still showed up. Then once again I sprayed all cabs with primer then lightly sanded. I then just sprayed the cabs with two coats of paint. I had new doors made which came primed and I just had to spray them and attach. I probably had 3 full days in this project but they still look great today.

Paint choices for the cabinets, well we first need to know what the cabinets are made out of?

Cabinet doors and drawer fronts, talk with any kitchen supplier, you should be able to order just about anything you want.

Preping out your trim, buy some Liquid Sandpaper.

I will take a better look this afternoon when I go back over to the house, but I believe they are pine. There are a total of 51 door and drawer fronts between the kitchen and baths and from what I can find so far they will average about 40-45.00 ea for a paint grade door.Does this sound about right?

Thanks for the tips on liquid sandpaper and deglosser.I will check into those.

That's a very good price for up here. Here we'd be looking around the $80 mark....give or take ten bucks.

After running the numbers again it looks like they will actually avg 45ea for mdf and 50ea for solid wood through home depot. That comes bored and with hinges. These are the just basic raised panel doors. We would do the solid wood for sure.I will keep looking and see if I can find anyone local besides the box stores.

If your painting them go with the MDF as they will not warp but other may say different. You said the cabs are stained and they will show alot of flaws once painted.

Generally speaking MDF is very stable and not likely to ever move.
Finishing/ painting MDF material is a breeze to do a first class job....no special concerns, just prime, scuff, paint.
If you consider MDF, go with high density (HD) MDF or even super (S) HD MDF. The difference is obviously the density, but that density difference is very important when it comes to hinge screws and drawer front mounting techniques. IMHO all MDF doors should have plastic inserts installed to except screws and hinge screws. I would not hang MDF at my place without them that’s for sure, ESPECIALLY if the doors had any kind of door knob on them.....doors are meant to swing, not hang off of them.
