I know there are several current and numerous former US military personnel on this board, I thought I'd ask my question.

My father served as a reservist in the Air Force National Guard and Army National Guard for a total of 6 years. I think it was from 1970-1976 and received an honorable discharge. Would he qualify for USAA benefits?

Thanks guys

Capt Jack,
I'm not sure if "benefits" is the word, but I have been a member for a few years, maybe 10 at most, and my separation was in 1972. I use them for insurance on home, boat, cars, rv. I don't know if insurance and finance are the benefits Chris asked about.

I was enlisted, but active duty. I forgot about that differentiation.

USAA, is hands down a great company. For Insurance and Banking. Keep checking the USAA website. Membership may be opened to anyone who "served"
I don't think you can find a better company with better customer service!

USAA has all my loans and insurances for boat, motor, cars, mortgage, everything. They are well and truly a great company. You may find a bank and insurer with a pinch better prices depending on locality, but USAA is so much better at customer service that it's not worth it.

USAA used to have to sell insurance to everyone in SC; military service or not. I used them for years, until the state insurance laws changed. They were excellent to deal with.

Because of my father, I am able to use USAA. I have every single thing I can with them. In fact the only thing I do not have with them is my boat insurance- they do not write boats with triples.

Funny thing is the loan on the boat is through them BUT they will not insure it!

I have only had a couple of issues over the years and they are always top notch when something comes up

they actually have gone downhill in the last 5 years as far as customer service. Used to be able to talk to anyone anytime, now its normal business hours and the waits are a little longer. They are trying to move alot of stuff that they normally handled over the phone to online. Still a pretty good company though.

Until recently, the money markets were pretty good also but are taxable.

I have only been a member for about 15 yrs but why the change for servicemen discharged prior to 1996?

You already said that, why are you repeating it?

Are you an actual "member" or do you use them because you can (ie you parents were military?).

My folks had an ssa, I do not, was never in the military, and I'm not sure how one's SSA grows to a "princely sum" as someone else said. After almost 40 yrs, my parents estate received a whopping 3 or 4K from it.

Good company anyway.

I can only agree in part with USAA great for auto insurance crap for Home owners. But hey they did give me 270$ towards a 2000$ roof repair after a storm (500$ deductible).

I has USAA auto insurance when I was in the AF (1965-69), but after all these years, probably don't have any old policies to prove it. Since they don't have records going back that far, is it fair to say I am ineligible at this point?

I have had them for about 25 years. A recent fender bender my daughter was in proved to me USAA is in for nothing but money. In this case both parties were USAA memebers so they did not have to answer to anyone but themselves. The 'experts' are corrupt, cannot keep their facts straight, and must have felt I was just going to take it. In the end all I did was loose as they are aware members in this situation have no recorse except to quit the company.
