Random Quote: Offshore fishing, like yacht racing, is like standing in a cold shower trying ignite thousand dollar bills.
I was in the middle of a partial kitchen remodel last year and I while I was in Sears for something else, I decided to check out the dishwashers. I was walking around opening them and viewing the inside, but when I got to the Kenmore Elite series and opened the door, a little splash of water came out. The machine was running and I was 18" in front of it and I could not hear it. I purchased it about 10 minutes later. I looked at the Bosch units also, and they seemed very nice with a very low decibel rating.

Reason: addition
My KitchenAid went in in '95 and I've only had to replace a few small rubber parts. I have a GE in the vacation home. The GE has a water "tower"(maybe 3 or 4" in diameter) that pops up in the center of the trays and takes up a lot of space that might otherwise be used for dishes. I've seen the same arrangement on other brands. I would suggest avoiding any machine that has a "hole" in the bottom tray for such a water pyramid (I don't know what it's actually called). We really like the KitchenAid.

Looked at Lowe's over the weekend. Make sure you get one where the silverware tray is in the door that way you dont lose space on the lower rack. We also looked at a whirlpool that had sprayers at the back of the washer that sprayed onto the bottom rack. Make sure the top rack is adjustable for taller glasses or bowls you may have.
Get the old lady a nice stopper for the bottom of the sink and a new scrub brush, woops that will not be too quiet
We installed a new Whirpool a couple of years ago and it is fine but wish I had gone with the Bosch. I was at someone's house a while back and they are right you never hear them running

We've got a GE Quietpower that we used to replace the builder grade a few years ago. It is very quiet, no complaints yet, but it hasn't broken like the 5 year old GE side by side refrig/freezer w/ water/ice in the door. Our old refrigerator is going strong in the garage, only 18 years old.. I guess they don't make 'em like they used to.

First, they are no better than the Bosch at half the price.
Second, our local dealer is a dope.
Third, the best part about them is the 3rd tray for silverware but I think you can get that option w/ the Bosch.

Wow - lots of Bosch fans! I am not one. I build high end homes - put a Bosch in one at the request of the buyer. It broke almost immediately and service was a nightmare. People love to sell them, no one can fix them. I usually go with GE profile with SS interior. Quiet, and easy to get serviced.
Yup another Bosch house hold here as well. I did seriously look at the Meiles as recommended by a fellow THTer, but I couldn't afford to go that route.
All I can say is my second from the top of the line Bosch is an awful lot quieter than the Misses doing the dishes.

I can't believe no one has mentioned to make sure it's energy star certified. We built our new house 3 years ago and made sure EVERYTHING was energy star rated. We used CFL light bulbs in everything.
Our house, and my 38'x30' garage seldom has a more than $200 electric bill, when my neighbors are grumbling about 500-600 bills.
One other thing, the most expensive is NOT the best. I am very meticulous with my research, checking reviews and all that. We ended up with a black(my wife is a designer, she said SS is dead) Fridgedaire model that cost less than $300 IIRC. It is VERY quiet, and cleans better than any other dishwasher I've owned in the past.
We learned you don't have to spend the most to get the best long ago, probably why we don't have any debt now, I'm 42, she's 40.
Have a Sears Kenmore nice quiet and works well - if you get the Bosch check out the minimmum cycle time. The one in the VT cabin I stay in has a real top end super quite Bosch - but the shortest cycle is like 90 minutes. Our last one was a cheap whirlpool or majic chef or GE - I forget - it lasted all the 18 years were in that house. I htink the interior loading arrangement may be important also so have the Misses check that out.
