Default "Navy ship outruns pirates, officials say" What?

http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa...led/index.html

Surely this was the French Navy, right?

They should have stopped for them, let them get reeeeal close and shot them all. Not French, USNS Louis and Clark a navy supply ship.

I am appalled they ran from them. Navy supply boat or not should have downed them when they engaged.

They wanted to show the Merchant Marines how the proper way to run.

Quote:
"The actions taken by Lewis and Clark were exactly what the U.S. Navy has been recommending to prevent piracy attacks -- for both commercial and military vessels," said Capt. Steve Kelley, commander of Task Force 53, assigned to the Lewis and Clark.
"Merchant mariners can and should use Lewis and Clark's actions as an unequivocal example of how to prevent a successful attack from occurring," he said.
Man the propaganda value of this is just great. Somali's chase the US Navy!!!!
never thought I would see the day.

I understand it is a supply ship in THE US NAVY!!! So it has no protection? Must have something because it can out run a skiff. Where as most merchant ships cannot.

"The Lewis and Clark sped up and tried to escape the pirates, and the ship's security team issued verbal warnings to the approaching skiffs, the Navy said."

Take that!

It's like Monty Python.....Runawaaaaaaaay!

You guy's seem to forget that it was the French Commando's who went after the pirates who hijacked Le Ponant, a French flagged sailing ship last year. The French paid the ransom, the pirates went ashore and the commandos followed them by helicopter several miles inland and BLASTED the piss out of them. Killed them all. Although news sources said they were "arrested". They were not arrested.

WHAT!?!?!?! I have to be reading this wrong. There has got to be something else to the story. I don't care if it is a supply ship. They attacked the US Navy. The US FKing navy and are still alive?!?!

A bunch of idiots in a couple of rowboats chased away this?

Oh yeah and the French do have some bad ass special forces people. I don't like to say it either but it's true.

Yes, For all you who are wondering why the navy is running....MSC is unarmed NAVY supply ships run by civilians, NON military personnel. They are the same as any shipping company just have military stuff on board and the Navy signs there paycheck's.

Default Lewis and Clark

You guys might be surprised to know there is a THT member on board that ship right now. It is not a US Navy ship. Hopefully more details come out, and ultimately, we all would like to see more of those pirate boats blown up. Still, the best thing we can do is to pray that our friends come home safe.

I am embarrased for us. Navy ship or non-navy ship, they should have taken the pirates out. The problem is not going to be solved by outrunning them. At the ransom prices they are getting they can buy quad powered Fountains. NO fight was ever won by running from it.

They still have a few military folks aboard and im sure they have a security team of armed sailors. MSC sailors are also able to qualify on many weapons.

Attacking a military supply line is indirectly attacking the military in my mind. If they have millitary "stuff" on board and sail through that area I think that military "stuff" should include some big ass pirate killing guns. I pay plenty of taxes and wouldn't mind seeing some of that money spent on getting rid of these pests.
