If you have older hardware, from the Win Xp era, pass on Vista. If you have hardware from the Vista era, go for it. Vista is extremely stable but ONLY on hardware designed to support Vista.
So far, I haven't found anything that even gets close to suggesting I should upgrade from Xp to Vista -- so I ain't doing it.

Vista was supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. They still dont have all the bugs out. What makes some of you think Windows 7 will be any different ?

I think Vista was supposed to be the next generation of OS that transferred more control, and thus more income, to MS. Win 7 is supposed to fix the failed Vista.
As I have said before, Win Xp will be may last Windows OS. After support for Xp fades to a point it is no longer usable, I'm going with a Unix based OX. I would consider an Apple but I just can't get over the super-inflated cost of the machine. And I have way too much fun building my own machines, anyway.

I forget where I was reading this, but what I recall is Mircosoft is dropping Vista like a hot potato once Windows 7 comes out. Vista will not be supported after the fact. So to answer your question, do NOT touch Vista with a ten foot pole, even if someone else is carrying that pole. What I also recall readying was Mircosoft will be replacing people's Vista for Windows 7 at no cost to the customer "if" their purchase of the new computer was purchased within a set time frame. So what's tell you about the integrity of Vista?
I am currently running Windows XP. Is there any benefit in upgrading to Vista?
Thanks.
Lots of benefits, you get to fill your idle time screwing around trying to fix things that previously worked perfectly on your pc, and meet lots of new friends on the web as you blow countless hours in tech forums trying to get the help that microshaft will not provide for you, so if you got the time, go for it, you will have loads of fun........NOT!
Windows 7 will be Vista---patched and fixed with some of the stupider GUI stuff changed up. They have burned the name Vista, so reintroduce the software minus most of the bugs, but call it something totally different. M-a-r-k-e-t-i-n-g.
I've got it on my home box, which is light duty use at best, and haven't had any problems, but I sure wouldn't spend money to upgrade to it. My laptop, which I use a lot more has got XP pro on it, and gets much harder use, and XP is sufficient for everything I do.

You should load Solaris or HP-UX on your PC. It will rarely crash..but then again, it will rarely get used either.
Don't do it. I have a new laptop with 4 gigs of ram, running VISTA that is so slow it's pitiful. But I have a 3year old desktop running WIN XP,with only 2 gigs of ram that is faster.
I have WIndows 7 and it is significantly faster and more user friendly than VISTA. I have none of the UAC issues and security is at a reasonable level. That's not to say they won't screw it up before it goes into wide release.
Vista is fine if you have the hardware for it. "Upgrading" any old computer to a new OS is a bad idea. Wait till you buy new hardware and make sure you buy hardware with the capacity you will need.
