If it didn't come with it, don't do it. The real question is "if I have Vista, should I down version to XP" While Vista looks good, and has some nice interfaces... like others have said, it really slows a machine down.
Don't do it. I have a new laptop with 4 gigs of ram, running VISTA that is so slow it's pitiful. But I have a 3year old desktop running WIN XP,with only 2 gigs of ram that is faster.
Check that memory again. Vista will only see three of the gigs.
1 gb is not used by the crappy OS.
If Win7 is just a rebranded Vista, you will see Apple's stock hit the roof.

He should see about 3.2gb.
The OS has to be 64bit to recognize any more than 4 gigs. Some computers, depending on the BIOS, will report 4Gig if it is present, but it won't necessarily use more it all. Vista 64 will recognize and use more.
Come on guys,I need the hull truth on this.My laptop died yesterday and I mean Its DEAD!
I am now shopping for a new laptop, nothing fancy ,any leads?
well, if you're sticking with a windows machine, i would just go to buy-dot-com and get a reconditioned IBM T-41/43 loaded with XP Pro. they're great machines and XP Pro was pretty stable. you may need a new battery, but that should be it. those machines are more than enough for email/websurfing/music and photos. and you can pickthem up for around $400.
