Default Holy crap!

I just got cable internet access and HOLY CRAP is this fast! It's faster than the T-1 at the plant. I can blaze through the photo section, etc like mad now. I can't believe I waited this long to get it. Man, I am one cheap bast@#^!

Sweet!

Just wait until you get a wireless router and a laptop computer. You'll be able to bring the laptop out to the boat and follow DIY threads and surf THT from the cockpit

What do the wireless routers go for? I've got a laptop, however, not a cetrino. Would I have to have the centrino processor? Just curious, not that I'm likely to do it right away. Man this thing is a hot rod now!

You can get a linksys wireless B router with laptop card for ~$100 - probably less by now.
The newer wireless G will run you a bit more.

You can hard-wire up to 4 PC's to the WAP (Wireless Access Point) and then hook up to 36 laptops (wireless) to it.

I have one PC, 3 laptops, 1 Microsoft X-Box (Video game console) and 1 PDA running on mine and it's the bomb!

Cool, thanks Firefly. $100 may be in the budget down the road.

I wouldn't need anything else special about my laptop though? Ie, centrino processor?

My laptop is a couple years old now. 900mhz processor, decent amount of the goodies available at the time.

Anything to be aware of?

Thanks again,

The wireless card plugs right into the side of the laptop- nothing special needed. One of the laptops I have on the wireless network is 350mhz and running windows 98- never had a problem.

Here is what I have: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...onics&n=507846

There is also a $15 rebate on this item

and it comes with the card for the laptop. You connect the desktop PC via ethernet cable or you can buy a wireless network card for them as well.

I have been wireless in my house for 3 years and it is great. On nice days I can take the laptop out and sit on the patio or hammock and surf. Also can add computers anywhere without wiring.

Great suggestion. I'll check it out down the road a piece. Sounds like a great tool. My brother in law has it, but got it years ago. He's an IT guy and payed big bucks for it then ($800 maybe, can't remember). That's why I was wondering the cost now. $100 is doable.....I know, I know Wiley , Pledge drive first......I'll see what I can do, but I did at least just ante up for the x2 thing.

One other question. Do you lose any speed of the cable connection with the wireless setup?

Thanks again Firefly.

Tiger,

I'm an it guy that does development. The kids would have headphones plugged into their box at the office and listen to on line music while they worked. Brought out T3 to it's knees. I now work at home with cable and it's nice. I'm in the burbs and thet has a lot to do with it. If you're in a city the shared bandwidth can slow it down a bit. Anyway it beats the hell out of 56k....

Centrino processor is not a necessity.* It's great for those who travel alot, i.e. salespeople, because everything is contained in the 'puter and is maximized for optimum battery life.* One thing you should do is to make sure your wireless connection is secure for your use only.* That is, if you have neighbors and others who can hop onto your network without you knowing.* This is the main drawback regarding wireless: security.**Just make sure that only authorized people can access your WAP and other computers, otherwise the other guys can peek into your computer.* I have it and love it.

Shorty, speed was 2043K. Bar graph was way past any of the others including the T1. I'm guessing that is pretty dang fast. Any input on that from anyone else? Pretty cool. Thanks for the link!

Thanks Hub, and everyone with the input.

Regards,

I downloaded both text and graphic on the wireless laptop at 2086K
Funny- my desktop running win 98 is much slower and its connected to the WAp via ethernet cable.

Does anyone have a wireless internet connection. I am not talking about router to computer but house/office to ISP. We use an antenna mounted on the chimney that shoots microwaves to the local ISP. It seems to scream but wondered if any of you IT guys have compared it to other type connections.

shaq, i have wireless ip. tower is about a half mile away. just got hooked up last fri. before had dial up and the best i ever got was 33.6 kbps, god it was slooooooow. now im getting 270 kbps (per toast.net), while thats not in tiger rags and others league to me it feels supersonic. i subscribe to the cheapest level of service, if your willing to pay about 50 bucks a month you can go up to 1mps. im very rural so cable and dsl are not even avail. i'm a happy guy.

Go to http://www.dslreports.com and then to the Tests&Tools on the left.* On the next page, go to Speed Tests.* Do a few and keep a record of them.

Next go to Tweak Test and run that.* You will likely find that some adjustments to your system are recommended, and that Dr. TCP should be downloaded to make the changes.

Without getting too techie, data is sent in "packets" on the Internet.* Packets are received and checked by the receiving unit.* If a packet is missed, or is corrupted, then a request is transmitted to have it resent.* On the slower dial-up systems, it is best to keep these packets small, and most Windows systems are*optimized for these dial-up connections.* On the*(much) faster communications of*broadband, transmitting*larger packets gets more data through, even if some have to be retransmitted.

So, do the Speed Test, then the Tweak Tests, then make the changes and do*some more tests.* (You may need to restart your computer after making changes with Dr. TCP).* You should be able to get at least 20% improvement in your current download speeds.

I just tested at 2805/252, from my wireless laptop..* :-)
