Mon 22 Dec 2008

By Sebastien Destremau

Following a somewhat tedious race since the start where the majority of the fleet only had to take once, the 100 000+ competitors have now entered the anxiously awaited Malacca’s Strait for one of the most exciting finish to date.

The Malacca Strait is not feared for the traffic of giant vessels, fishing boats and nets or millions of seaweed but for the trickiest part of this short leg. It is going to be a tense run to the finish as the Malacca Strait works its magic, narrowing the fleet down into a funnel and slowing us down considerably.

The forecast is for little to no wind and who will get the little zephyr is anyone’s guess? Staying North of the Strait looks good at this stage however the extra distance might be too costly whilst the most direct route could be the quickest way to get there.

Only 40 miles separates the leader from the 50 000th placed boats and any single mistake will be extraordinarily expensive. Positioning ourselves in the strait will be crucial and a little bit of luck will not go astray as well.

Following the tracks of the countless competitors tells us that sleepless nights and tense moments are on the card until the finishing line is in sight!

Fair wind to all

I can't wait to see what happens when we round that corner. All I know is that I finally found some wind...

Exackly. After the pirates have their way with the guys in front of me, it should be clear sailing for me. Good thing I packed some Double Ought Buck and a good retriever in the hold. I might sell some of ya'lls stuff back to your widows at the bar in the Singapore Sling...

Reminds me of a book I read 20 or so years ago.

This fellow was sailing around the world single handed back in the 50's or early 60's. He was somewhere in the part of the world where we are currently virtual racing when he came upon some pirates, or more correctly, they came upon him. He assumed they were pirates as they never got close enough to identify themselves. He decided to fend them off with some of his special cargo - sticks of dynamite. He reported that it worked particularly well, much better than warning shots from a pistol.

Of course, the pirates of yesteryear weren't equipped with rocket propelled grenades as the are today so I don't know how well his strategy would work now but I thought it was a terrific solution the problem at the time.

I've been having a hard time getting on the server. I guess the server is overloded much of the time due to the number of entrants. I would think they would know the capability of their equipment and limit the number of participants allowed access.

Oh well, I guess computer racing is as fickle as the wind in the real world. Press on.

I think everybody has guessed by now that I'm either a fair-weather sailor, or stupid, or all of the above. Ran aground and it cost me a couple of days...and now I find myself hugging the coast again. Some old dogs are just hard to train...

Nobody from the group has finished yet. The winner will be Sea Herpes. He is only 20 miles and there is no way Reel can catch up.

It is amazing to me that in a 1400 mile race, that the best boats can stretch a 500 mile lead. They have some mad skilz...
