I am having to tack to make the turn and I am losing places, wtf, where is the wind
The winds are going to pick up and shift south in less than 12 hours.. When they do, that is when I am going to make a run to the east to get on track.

Thursday is my drinking night.. There is no telling where I will set my course at 2am!!
First it is best to be to well to windward, consider the prevailing winds in how far to windward you want to be.
Secondly the rankings are erroneously based on "as the crow flies" distances. Be wary of that. You can be number 1 boat and the wind shifts. The result can be that you end up at the back of the pack. So watch the forecast and your position vis a vis wind and the marks - including final mark.
Menzies - 11/19/2008 9:06 PMActually "irons" isn't luffing.Irons is when you have the wind the "wrong" side of your foresail, but the foresail still cleated to the windward side, and the "right" side of your mainsail. Normally can happen when you are just off head on to the wind. The two sails offset each other and you are stuck until you release the foresail to come across the bow.We used to do it between races instead of anchoring. You basically just sit there, maybe drifting a little and your sails aren't rattling.
So how do you explain irons on a boat with just a mainsail?
