Random Quote: you can't were out something that self lubricates.
Considering your name is Kingair, I am guessing you are a pilot. At irons is the term for "stalling" a sailboat. Your angle of attack is too great the sail ceases to produce lift. Once you are at irons, your sails aren't providing "lift" to propel the boat forward and you are at the mercy of the current and wind acting on the boat.
Irons is when you have the wind the "wrong" side of your foresail, but the foresail still cleated to the windward side, and the "right" side of your mainsail. Normally can happen when you are just off head on to the wind. The two sails offset each other and you are stuck until you release the foresail to come across the bow.
We used to do it between races instead of anchoring. You basically just sit there, maybe drifting a little and your sails aren't rattling.

Good guess
Thanks for the tip. I sailed full boats when I was a kid in Norway. I never heard the term. Thanks
Dammit - how did I fall into last? did my sail blow out in the night or something?
Apparently, while the wind blows you suck.
I found that you can play with the sails and the knot meter will change, giving you a good indication of what you should be doing. Also works when changing heading, you can experiment for best speed. Don't forget to validate new heading.

Menzies that is not "irons"
What Menzies is describing is called "heaving to" / back winding see here:
and RI Builder is 1/2 right as the sails luff but by definition Irons is when the bow boat is directly into the wind and the sails can not generate any energy.

Yes, Changing the sails, larger or smaller, different shape will make the boat go faster. Your heading which can be adjusted will also have a huge effect on speed. Also take a look at the "Wind Arrows" aim the boat to the higher speed winds. I've given enough clues, let the better sailor win

Doing all that.
what exactly does "validating" do?

Yo Menz. Although, it is against my general rule not to help or acknowledge you... In this, were all on the same side so...
Screw with the heading for the best speed and then change the sail for optimal speed and make sure you hit the "check mark to the lower right to lock it in or it wont register.
Wind is updayted every 8-12 hours from what i can tell. Ive only been in for a day so thats all the tips i have.
