Random Quote: The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad
Glad that one is over. See what happens when you can't check the boat for days? Every computer I tried last week would not let me log on. Fell to last place in the THT gang.
Oh well, Saturday's another story, right?
Good luck guys!!
So what time will it start in Georgia, USA? Are we going to have that whole "Greenwich time, one hour plus blah blah blah" discussion again? I just need to know when the dang thing starts. Please, somebody help a poor country boy out, will ya? I just hope it doesn't interfere with my fishing tomorrow, or my Famous Valentines Day Party tomorrow night.
Briefing 12 February 2009
Fifth LEG - Volvo Ocean Race Game
Qingdao to Rio de Janeiro
Departing Qindgao on 14 February 2009 at 13:00 local time or 06:00 GMT+1, the fleet will leave New Zealand to starboard side before heading to the roaring forties. No exclusion zone applied to the virtual race, however New Zealand and two gates will be have to be left to starboard meanwhile Cape Horn will be left to port before racing to the finish line in Rio de Janeiro. 12,300 nautical miles long, this LEG should take about five weeks. It is the most difficult LEG of the Volvo Ocean race.
As usual, we remind you that if you cannot be connected at the time of departure, your boat will be launched automatically at the best angle for the first few hours of the race until your first connection. However, we cannot guarantee that the boat will take the optimal route.
THE START
Saturday, 14 February 2009, Starting Signal 13:00 local time or 06:00 GMT+1
THE COURSE - Length approx. 12,300 miles
Start in Qingdao - Finish in Rio de Janeiro.
5 weeks going into spring time? Looks like there's going to be a lot of, "set it and forget it", changes with a hoped-for constant wind direction on the open ocean.

I leave for a bareboat charter in Abaco Thursday March 19. Which by my reckoning is exactly five weeks! No way am I going to be able to manage my boat from there so I need to get this over and done with by then. It's going to be close. I might just have to hand my boat over to someone!
from the spanking you gave me on that last leg, let me offer to take the helm of your boat during those last couple of miles.... I can promise you that it'll be memorable!

I can see it now. I'll be sitting sipping a rum and coke in the Sea of Abaco and my VOR boat will come sailing by!
I have a question. The VOR blurb about Leg 5 mentions the " 50' virtual waves"?? Do any of you guys deal with waves on your screen? I have enough trouble with that hard stuff called land....

A crew led by Team Russia skipper Andreas Hanakamp left the marina at Singapore today on their way to Cape Town, after an emotional dockside farewell.
Ten days after they arrived at the One ° 15 Marina on Sentosa Island to reveal that the campaign was in trouble due to the world financial crisis, the Humphreys-designed Kosatka slipped anchor and motored out to Singapore and beyond through the Straits of Malacca, en route to Africa.
The crew, comprising Hanakamp and seven fellow Austrians all wearing Team Russia shirts, were given a damp send off when the heavens opened just as they were leaving, their exit thereafter accompanied by torrential rain.
"We will try and secure more funding but in the current economic climate, it is difficult to get anyone to make quick decisions," said Hanakamp.
"It is personally very disappointing because I was looking forward to the long leg to Rio, but it is a professional game and I was just doing a job so we have to get on with life."
Over the next few days, it will become clear whether any Team Russia crew member has found a job on any other boat but if not, all will be hoping to resume racing later in the year.
"We are hoping that we can secure more funding and can be back in the race in Rio or Boston. There is a lot of activity on a round the clock basis finding sponsorship and hopefully we have found companies that might say yes, but are not saying it quickly."
