Default Rifle Recommendation

looking to purchase a new/used rifle and need a bit of advice on quality and caliber. Will be used for deer/boar and anything else. Leaning towards 30.06 or 270, I hear remington and wetherby put out quality products, any opinions?

Both Remington and Weatherby produce excellent products but will be different in pricing. You don't mention what action type you're interested in, bolt, semi auto, lever or pump. Your caliber selections are sound, albiet narrow. Also consider the .308 and the 7mm08 as viable too.
I can tell you one thing about the .270 and that is, it's a kicker!!!! I've owned 4 .270's and sold them all within a short time of purchase, why I keep buying them is beyond me........ They are just a little bit above my recoil tolerance level and I'm good for maybe 5 shots off the bench before Mr. Flinch sets in.....
Where do you plan to do the majority of your hunting???? That may help in the selections of action type and caliber.......

I like the idea of a lever action, but i dont like the idea of getting sand/dirt in the action and jamming, thats just a mental hangup of mine. Would really like a semi-auto, however not necessarily a pump, not sure if they even make an auto-loader. Mostly swamp like area, occassional tree stand action. I was also leaning towards the .30-30 lever Marlin. Just so many choices, wish there was a place to try all the different makes/models/calibers before deciding.

Scope will be a whole other issue, unless i can luck up on a good deal with one already mounted.

If you do a lot of walking then a lightweight Remington in 7mm08 is nice. Plenty of power and light with more than enough bullet selection or even a 308 but will have some recoil.

If you want a lever action then look at the Marlin 336 in 308 Marlin Express. Nothing wrong with a 30-30 but not in the same category with the cartridges that you mentioned.

You are in the right ball park for caliber. In fact, those are the two I would recommend as all-around rounds. The 30-06 in particular has a bazillion loads available for it. The only other round I would toss in there is a .308, a 30-06 in a shorter case. Same bullet, a little less powder behind it, a little less oomph, perfect for either boar or deer, especially on the East coast. On the West coast and Rockies the shots tend to be longer. A necked-down 30-06, aka a .270, is faster, has a flatter trajectory. Same case as a .30-06, just a small diameter bullet.

Remington .270, BDL, if they still make it. Best accuracy out of the box than most rifles. All around a really good round.

If you're planning on hunting boar in close cover, consider a Browning BAR. Racking a second round while 500 pounds of Really Mad Kill is charging you might take longer than you'd like (or have).

Lever guns are no more prone to action fouling from outside sources than any other type action.

In the calibers under discussion about the only lever gun that could be had is the BLR (Browning Lever Gun)

Remington and Browning have made autoloaders in the suitable calibers for a good many years, not sure about current production but they are available on the used markets.

To fully utilize the calibers mentioned a scope would be mandatory.

I have a semi auto Remington 7400 in 30 06. I love that gun and the round... Best for all around North American game (deer, boar etc.). If you are making long shots then get the 270..

Try one of these. Shouldn't need to worry about a follow up shot!

I have a Browning Medallion in 7mm WSM I would like to sell. It has a Burris 4-12x40 scope on it. I will throw in 6 boxes of rounds (44.00 a box) for 1000.00 shipped. I have almost 2000.00 in it.

Less the 22" barrel .06 I have a 7600 pump in the 18" 06 flavor I can take it to PA to hunt and nothing carry's as well while tracking in the snow
22" and longer This say's you want some range I have a 24" Weatherby in 270 Win came from Walmart This rifle shoots better than 1/2" groups with handloads and just under 1" groups with Hornady 140gr light mag loads(140 psp at 3100fps) My handloads are with 130gr Nosler ballistic tips and 130 gr game king serria's Both take 59.5 grains of H4831 over a federal match 215 In this rifle it shoots 3272 fps with less than 10fps deviation over a chronagraph
I have numerous other calibers but I use these 2 for everything that I want hunt!!
The 308 would be slightly better in a short barrel gun The rest of the 308 family below the 308 might not have the stopping power for a pissed off poorly hit boar
Magnums are overkill I have 2 one in 300 wby and the other in a 375 wildcat The 300 wby will shoot into a pie plate at 1000yds I use it just for that purpose I use to hunt it but I get better kills with the 270 The 300 just does not transfer all the energy into the animal It tends to go through or tear the backside off the animal if it hits large bone on deer Moose it's great but I don't go for Moose anymore
As far as Kick In the same gun a 30.06 will kick more than a 270 win if they both fire the same 150 gr bullet at the same 3000fps The reason is the powder used in the .06 will have a faster burn rate than the 270 If you could use the same burn rate powder they would be the same in felt recoil

I have to agree with Cracker, the Rem 7400 is well suited to all your requirements.

They're not expensive, and they are reliable. The only drawback is the trigger tends to suck (which you can fix) and the sights are hard to work with, but most folks scope them anyway.

Of course, they're f-all loud and kick like hell, but if that bothers you, take up squirrell...

I have 2 Remington 700's (bolt action), one .30-06 and the other 7mm Rem Mag. These are great rifles and there are lots of choices for ammo. They won't break the bank either.

Yup. But when I think 'lever action' I also thing 'tubular magazine' A tubular magazine means a much more limited option on what rounds you can use.

Fwiw, my hunting hardware action is a drop block, single shot in .30-06. No magazine, no second chance, no meat on the table tonight, dear.
