My neighbor stopped by the farm with his new gun and we had a blast shooting ground hogs. I don't remember who made it but it was a AR-15 type gun. It was just as fun as shooting the 10/22 just with better range. I might pick one up and wondered what are the better ones or the ones to stay away from. It seems they run between $900 and $1500.
You will find that the ammo for an AR type rifle is going to run quite a bit more than .22 but they are hoot to shoot. I personally like Bushmaster and you can get a good one in your price range. Whatever you get, get it quickly. Depending on the election the Brady Bunch might be up to their old antics again.

I really like the Bushmaster and the DPMS. When I retire from the Air Force, if I don't buy a nice shotgun it will be an AR-15 in .308, probably a DPMS.

Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, DPMS, Armalite, Colt and others are all good weapons. I have a bushy M4 and a DPMS panther bull 20. Theres so many options and configurations you got alot of choices.
I am leaning towards the Armalite as it is a few bucks cheaper. Then I will buy a couple cases of ammo and be busy all winter at the range. Are the target models that much better to shoot? I am an average shooter but love the accuracy my contender has. I can always tell that I screwed up when I review my shoots not the gun.
Have you considered a Ruger Mini14 Ranch Rifle? I bought one last spring and i really like it so far. Fun to shoot, low recoil, and plenty powerful. I've been using Russian cartridges (Wolf) and they seem to work pretty and are relatively cheap.
I hear that Rock River makes the best varmint version in .223. I had a Bushmaster in the standard homeland defense configuration but am jonesing for a varmint version since I missed the Cooper that was on sale at the local shop yesterday.
sorry Hydro but a mini14 is going to have no where near the accuracy of a quality ar-15. I know I own one. Yes the target models are that much better. Carefull with the wolf ammo as some of it has a steel case and they also lacquer the round to seal it. If it has a steel case its gonna bust something eventually and the lacquer gums up a hot barrel. You can get mil spec green tips for not much more.
I guess it will depend on what's on sale. I have been looking at Atlantic Firearms and Impact guns, both seem to have decent prices online. It sucks that the next gunshow locally is not until Feb.
It seems like the economy has the used rifle market frozen. Either they don't want to sell anything or they want more than retail for the used gun. I hope to pick one up in the next week or so.
as far as used black rifles, they are waiting for the election. Anything with a flash suppressor is going to double in value. I have about 30 hicap mags. I bought them for 10 bucks apiece. They were selling for 120 bucks under Clinton. Better get your game on before the election.
The new piston operated AR's are really sweet. I bought an LWRC last year and it has several thousand flawless rounds through it. Traditional AR's operate on a gas "blowback" system which blows hot dirty gas right into the receiver. They have a gun at the LWRC test facility which has 80,000 rounds fired through it and it has never been cleaned (although it has gone through several barrels). AR's are just too much fun no matter what kind you get. As mentioned above the Brady's are circling up above waiting for an Obama victory and if they do anything it will increase the value of AR pistol lowers, hi cap mags, Folding AK's, AR's, 50BMG's and every other thing that looks like it could be used on an assault rifle. Good luck and shoot straight.
My bro told me a couple weeks ago that DPMS is in a 6-8 month back order situation. The only DPMS stuff you can get is what may be on a dealers shelf right now. The company directly attributes their soaring sales to Noblama getting into the White house with a Democratic legislature behind him. The sales guy my brother usually talks to also expects that they will be out of business within a year or two if he gets elected. Hence the name Noblama.
In that price range, I'd recommend Armalite (yes the target models shoot a little better), DPMS, and Colt. If you want to up the ante for a real tack driver go with a custom Les Baer or Accuracy Systems.
Remember, if you have a hard-on for a bunch of high speed watermelon and waterbottle shoots, buy a second inexpensive upper for your AR. Don't burn up your good target or custom upper playing spray and pray at the range. Save it for long range varmints and predators.
Heed the previous posts warning about el cheapo ammo. Some of it is bad for the bore, some of it is bad for the action, some of it is just plain bad. Don't wreck a good rifle with cheap ammo.
With regard to the VTR, I tried to buy one for a buddy who finished up a construction project for me. The three dealers in my area insisted that Colt, Armalite, and S&W were better options. Since I have been pleased with my Armalites, I went that route. However, you could not build an AR with that weight barrel, free floated handguard, and custom camo job as cheap as they are letting those VTRs out the door.
Remington and Bushmaster were both bought by the same company, all the Remington R-15 is is a relabeled bushmaster predator rifle, which is a fine tack driver. Dpms is also owned by the same company. The R-15 is a great weapon. 6.5 Grendel is great but you will never find ammo for it. You would end up more than likely having to reload. If you want to know what company owns all three, I will put it to you this way, Chrysler essentially owns all three of these companies.
