Default TV problems

I came home tonight and noticed our big screen tv is out of focus and the colors look odd.

It is a Sony 56" and I guess we have had it 6-7 years, Admiral doesn't want to hear it but I am afraid these things are more to repair than they are worth.

Any ideas, not that I am wanting to purchase a new tv but had to move the 32" from bedroom to den and that just ain't getting it but will have to make do till I can get it checked out

I recently had a 56" HD-ready tv die. I figured it was the power supply, but at the cost of new, awesome tvs today, I just ran out and bought a nice 1080P 56" at Costco.

Unless you can diagnose and fix, buy a new one.

Did you(or the admiral) do any rearranging lately? I moved mine a few months back and discovered that having a large stereo speaker behind it(in the corner) did exactly the same thing. Speaker magnet rearranged the beam.

Have you tried the focus (not sure of technical name, but where you line up the crosshairs)? I have an auto focus, but I find I get better results when I do it manually. Also, when all else fails try leaving it unplugged overnight, then plug it in the next morning. My 57" rear projection gets goofy every now and then and I get that sick feeling, then the next day it is feeling better (and so am I). Good luck

Never have touched any adjustments on this tv, I am going to leave it unplugged over night and see if that works.

Lately when we turn the tv on it blinks off and on several times till it comes on

If it is time to replace what do I look for, LCD 1080????

IF you can find a good service shop that might not be true. 27" Quasar fixed for $55 when my nephew blew out the audio amp watching MTV. 1985 21" Panasonic $60 to replace the power module, 8 years ago. I hate throwing stuff away.

We do have a TV repair shop about a mile from out house. That will be my first step.

I do not know much about them but they have been there a long time and I assume they are honesty, if not you do not last long in this area

Sounds like the power source. I think that is what it is called. I think when I researched my brand online in forums, $300+ to repair.

For me, that means to get a new, much better tv. I went out that day and came home with the replacement.

If you go into the menu (select on the remote control) there should be something like setup or configuration. Then look for something like focus adjust. If you have the manual you may find something in there about it. If it's out of adjustment it usually looks blurry or if it's really bad like double-vision.

Tried all of the above, I am going to call repairman today. Sure is a bitch not being able to watch MNF on big screen or lay in bed and watch it .

If we do decided to go with a new tv what are the advantages/disadvantages of DLP v LCD.

Any brands to steer clear of, not wanting to invest a fortune and I HATE DEALING WITH SALES PEOPLE at an electronics store

Can't blame you there. Half of those sales people were working at McDonald's last week, flipping burgers. Most of them know as much about electronics as I know about nuclear physics.

We've had very good luck with Philips LCD sets. Got two of them, one in living room and one in the sun room. Just did a lot of research online about the various brands, settled on Philips, and bought both of them at BJ's. No annoying sales people, just load it up, check out, and haul it home.

Go with 1080p over 1080i. i = interlaced and p =progressive. Interlaced uses every other line of resolution similar to the CRT television does, so you are only seeing half of the picture at any time (theoretically). Progressive uses all lines of resolution, so you see a more crisp picture.

Aside from that I think most of the brands are going to be good (they might all be made by about 4 manufacturers anyhow-not 100% sure)

Sounds good, except ... There is a reason why interlace scan was used for CRT displays from the get-go. By updating 1/2 of the picture every 1/60th second you get a much smoother transition viewing 30-frames/sec for things in motion. Modern, digital displays are catching up, but not always. In particular, LCD displays suffer from things moving fast across the display, especially if viewed 'p'. Plasma displays are much better at displaying moving objects, like a football ref in a striped shirt, in motion. For more static images, i.e. a close up of someone talking, anything works.

If you're going to buy a new LCD or Plasma I suggest you research Consumer Reports first. You can do it online.

They are not all the same. Costco has great deals however next one I am going to purchase from Best Buy, PC Richard, or similar appliance, electronics sales establishment. You pay a little more but I believe there is a difference in quality.
