Anyone own some great boating sunglasses they really like? My first and last pair of Costa Del Mar glasses just broke, and they won't honor their worthless "Lifetime warranty". http://costadelmar.com/SeeOutThere/CareRepair/
I did nothing to damage these glasses- the right arm broke right in the middle. I took the time to package them and write a letter of explanation. They wrote me back and told me I could receive another pair for $80- I told them to keep the broken ones, and that I would be sure to spread the word about their "Lifetime warranty". If I broke my glasses, I would have no complaint about springing for a new pair. When they fall apart like they did, I expect the manufacturer to do the right thing.
I owned a pair of Ocean Waves years ago. When they broke, they were replaced right away based on the reasonable explanation I provided.

The funny thing is I own a pair of Ocean Waves and had bought the Costa Del Mar glasses as an alternate pair. I've gone back to wearing the Ocean Waves. The boating community is far too small and connected for companies to treat boaters like that.

Might also take a look at Kaenon Polarized as well. High quality frames and lenses. Maui Jim always seems to take care of their customers and has high quality product as well.
They offer to sell a new pair for a discounted price all the time. You just need to tell them that you just want them to fix the ones you sent inn. I have sent my pair of Fathom 580's back twice and both time they offered to sell me a new pair for a discounted price but that if idid not want to do that then they would fix mine for free i just had to pay the $9 for shipping.

They did offer to fix them for $22, but I did not want anything more to do with this company; it comes down to the principle and doing the right thing- Why are they charging me ANYTHING if they back their product with a "Lifetime warranty" and I did nothing to break them? Other than shipping, I should not have to pay anything. In the past, I have bought new $200 glasses when I broke mine- I did not break these. Costa Del Mar seems to be the biggest manufacturer of boating sunglasses, so perhaps they feel they can treat people like this.

Thanks for the report. I'm in the market for new sunglasses, but now my search just got a bit smaller.
I hate businesses that try to get away with treating their customers that way.
I too got hosed on the Costa Del Mar "lifetime warranty"...mine broke and I sent them back.
Got the offer of repair for $30 or replacement for $40. Figured its still cheaper than buying a new pair so I said yes to the replacements. Trouble is they sent me the wrong glasses....mine were "supposedly" destroyed...and I am stuck.
I will never buy A pair of Costa again as well.
I dropped a pair of mine and damaged the lens. I sent them to Costa expecting to have to pay for the repairs. After 3 weeks of not hearing from them. I called, they said they have been meaning to call me but have not had time to. They told me it would take 6 weeks and $50 to repair or the could send me a new pair for $80 the next day. So I took the new pair. I get them and the frames are so bad out of shape they are 1/2 inch unlevel on my face (and it was the glasses not my head). They said to send them back and they would fix them. 3 weeks later I get them back in the same condition I sent them back in. I called and they said they put them on their straighting table and fixed them. I said they are the same as when I sent them to you. They said that is all we do for you have a good day. I took them to the local dealer and they exchanged them for me. That will be the last pair of Costa I will ever buy.
Got to defend Costa here. I have had nothing but great customer service from them. I stepped on a lens and sent them back. Two weeks later I had a brand new pair of 580's at my door no charge. My dealer has replacement arms in house and has replaced a couple for me. I will never own another brand they have been great.
I said they are the same as when I sent them to you. They said that is all we do for you have a good day.
Funny- I tried to explain to the woman I spoke with that I did not break these, and she kept repeating "That is all we can do for you" like a freakin' robot! I finally told her she could keep my worthless brokenglasses and slammed the phone- I was pissed!

doctodd - 9/12/2008 10:48 PM anger management.....you catch more bees with honey. So how did you expect her to act?
I slammed the phone after explaining the situation to her for 20 minutes and having her repeat the same thing over and over. I doubt you would have reacted much differently.

After many paid repairs I am done also.......the rubber parts fall apart...the polarizing layer discolors around the edges....Never once have they said "no problem" Its always a charge to fix or replace with a new pair at a discounted price. I will not buy another new pair. I may be forced to buy a few more "discounted" new ones till I loose them. I have 2 pairs and both need repairs. I have a pair of Ocean Wave "grand caymen's' that are 5 years old. Frames are solid as new, glass is like new, and rubber on arms is like new. Costa's fall apart in a year.
Ocean waves has been great. I sent back a pair of costas cause the damn lense cracked real bad after 2 weeks and the bastards lost them, told me they never recieved them.
I wore my Brine 580's even without the rubber, they had super vision, the lenses were great. I took a knife to the rubber on the frames after 6 months because it was falling apart.
I lost them about 4 weeks ago. I didn't look very hard for them.
Replaced them with some cheapy calcutta's. View's not the same, but the rubber hasn't fallen of yet.
Judging by the response from this thread which started last night, Costa's days may be numbered unless they change their ways and their product quality. The rubber on my glasses was peeling as well, but I hadn't even complained about that. Anyone wear Hobie's?
