Default Perserving precious ounces

Are there any tricks to preserving precious ounces when putting a fish on ice. Such as, is it better to just cover the fish with ice versus say a icechest with more water than ice. Or would it be better to try and keep it alive for as long as I could before putting it on ice? Any help or suggestions, I'm manily referring to Speckle Trout. I been beat out of first place 2 years straight by only 1/100th of a pound. I need an edge. Thanks

Shove a few ice cubes down his throat? Keep submerged in ice water and hope it absorbs some water? Try doing a science project with it and see if there is any difference.

Don't they all have to be live? I would think it would weigh the most alive - and wouldn't the contest organizers require it? I know they do that for freshwater bass. Maybe you could slip the ol boy soem nutragain or somehting.

Hard to keep them alive as I don't have a release well onboard my Contender. BUT, not to say that it wouldn't be worth my time to rig one up. Only the Redfish ProAM tour requires that the redifish be alive. No Trout tourney that I know of require a live fish. It would weigh more alive, but hard during the summer months. I was searching for a miracle that someone had a better idea than the Ole' ice cube in the mouth or sinker down the throat. Thanks for the responses, keep them coming.......

Just a thought... A tuna tube might keep a trout alive.
