Default Olympic Opening Ceremonies

The Olympic Opening Ceremonies were impressive but raised a question in my mind.

The initial part consisted of 2008 drummers beating drums linked to strobe lights that made interesting graphic patterns. The announcers stated that it was phenomenal that they all stayed in perfect sync just by the rhythm. That seems very difficult and unlikely.

I would have just linked all 2008 strobe lights to a computer and told each drummers to beat his drum when his strobe flashed. Voila! Perfect Synch.

I thought the entire show was incredible, especially the boxes that raised and lowered in waves. Once again, human controlled, WOW!

I did notice they all had ear pieces in though.

I noticed all the drummers had earpieces. Probably wireless to a Dr Beat somewhere. Great fireworks, although I would expect that from the Chinese.

I just read that some of the fireworks at the ceremony were faked. Computer generated! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/oth...nts-faked.html
Leave it to the Chinese...

Read again. Seems the fireworks were all real - it was the filming of them they were concerned about so they pre-planned/filmed that.

Thanks however I read the whole article the first time... However none the less they showed completely computer generated graphics and portrayed them as live regardless of how hard' it would have been to film. "But most of the audience thought it was filmed live - so that was mission accomplished." <-From the article.

i am astounded at the venues they built for the events, especially the "water cube"
say what you want about those communist bastiges, but you have to respect their expertise
the buildings they had designed and constructed for this event blow anything we did in atlanta completely out the water

Actually, while they have indeed poured a substantial sum into the Olympics, the design for both the Bird's Nest and Water Cube were done by foreign firms, Swiss/English and Australian respectively, and the construction was heavily led by foreign firms.

I was fortunate enough to visit the site in January near the end of construction. Both are spectacular - but especially the National Stadium. The Water Cube has a small moat around it because the ETFE material can be easily compromised.

As an aside the actual bubble design was from work done by two professors at Trinity college Dublin (my son is starting there next month)!

Didn't see the Olympics anything. But I 'do' drums (taiko). Yes, everyone syncs to the rhythm. No strobe lights, no computers. Just bare feet and two sticks of wood. It is referred to as "soul music" in Asia because it is played from the 'soul'. It is highly regarded and unless you are close friends with whoever (in Asia) it is best not to make jokes about playing those drums. Those folks take those drums (taiko) very seriously.

Fwiw, there is often a small brass bell, shaped like a teacup saucer and held by a sting, that is tapped with a small brass hammer to keep everyone in sync during complex passages. The bright, high-pitched 'ting' of the bell pierces the loudest, low-freq 'rumbling; of the biggest drums. The pattern and rhythm of playing tells a story. I have no idea about the stories, they are based on mythology, ancient tales, stuff like that. I'm in it for the aerobic exercise. And can I help it if there are only 4 guys in the taiko club with 28 members.

Atlanta isn't a communist country so we needed to make the venues commercially viable for the post Olympic timeframe. I guess we could have done more if we could have found construction workers to accept $5 as a weekly salary.

If you didn't see it you missed the strobe lights. That was a major part of the show. I still think they synced the lights electronically and the drummers just beat on them when their strobe flashed.

If you saw it you would understand.

Granted this may not be the most reliable source in the world but if this is true it does shed some light on the extremes China will go to present their country in a good light for the Olympics, after all buck teeth would have ruined the opening ceremony for me. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/oth...-ceremony.html
