Random Quote: It's easy to simulate the joys of boating. Just stand in a cold shower and tear up $100 dollar bills
I take my 1/2 lab 1/2 poodle to the groomers at $60 a pop. I tried doing it once with a set of $25 clippers and it took WAY too long and he looked horrible (not that I care). In order to save $$ I want to start grooming him myself. Are there clippers that'll work better and faster? What do you suggest? He has fairly thick black hair.

Send an email to the Obama campaign and ask them what he uses.
Yep, I have the critter groomed every 5-wks, costs about the same as you pay. I also tried doing it myself but could never get anywhere near the results of the groomer. I even tried a pro model electric shears made by Andis, used by barbers. The dog's hair was just too think.
Never done it myself, but my stepdad does it on their cocker spaniel. Says that human hair trimmers wont cut it (ha). Go to petsmart and they have a wide selection of pet hair trimmers that apparently work well
Nair? I mean, it is a poodle.

Actually, You DON'T disagree with me. You THINK you disagree with me, but you're mistaken. You're simply experiencing an illusion caused by the limits of your comprehension. -Dilbert
With 3 dogs I started doing the same thing, and got a set oh high end trimmers and so far works well but it aint as easy as trimming the hedges!
Practice on the roaming dogs in the neighborhood!
My girlfriend does her dog, a terrier mix of some sort. She did such a bad job once that even the dog was embarrassed.
Would think you could find an instructional video ......... Happened to have ebay open on another tab, there are plenty of how to videos on the subject...
I hope you are bathing and brushing the poor dogs out before trying to clip them. If not try it the next time, you may be pleased at the difference that makes. Have a nice day.
OK for all the wise cracks, I groom my lab/poodle (Labradoodle) mix monthly. He is 3/4 Poodle 1/4 lab. I have allergies and poodles have hair, that most people are not allergic to.
First get a good pair of clippers, I use Oster. Second pick the correct blade, I can try to remember to check what blade I use, but I went into the groomer at Petsmart, and she told me what one to use. The number on the blade has to do with how long the hair is left. When I am done, he has about 1/4" of hair left. (Works well for us, because he swims often, and the shorter hair dries quick and does not matt up.)
If the dog is really matted, you may want to take it down to skin, it will grow back quickly!!!
Keep the blades sharp. It cost about $5 to have them sharpend. Again the groomer told me where to get it done locally.
Now for the hard part. I groom my dog on the work bench. Start slowly, do a small area. I like to start with the legs, as they are the hardest area to do. If the dog or I get fustrated I can stop after the front legs are done, and he does not look to silly. Then later I can do the next two legs. Once you start the body, you pretty much have to finish it, or it looks silly. Most of the time the dog lays there while I groom him, some times I make him stand depending on what area I am grooming.
One of the things I did for when he gets difficult, is to put a hook on the ceiling, to run a strap under him to keep him standing. Again watch how the do it a Petsmart or other chain groomer that does it in front of a windows.
Treats go a long way in keeping the dog occupied. I use a couple of slices of cheese, giving him little pieces at a time. He is now to the point where I can do most of the cut in one sitting, about 1-2 hours depending on how long I let it go between cuts. I do let him get off the table every now and then to keep it easy. He will run outside shake off, and then come right back in, he will even jump back up on the workbench.
Keep a shop vacum handy, there is a lot of hair on a dog, also have a chnge of clothes handing it will be all over you.
There is a video that I bought from one of the Labradoodle breeders that walks you thru the cutting process, but mainly the walk you thru how to brush them out.
Thanks NPH! We have our labradoodle shaved to 1/4" as well. Did you get your clippers at petsmart as well? How much were they and are they a special model made for dogs?
Thanks!
I did get them at petsmart. I do not remember how much they were, but do recall that if I groomed him 2-3 times I would more then pay for the clippers. I did get the Oster A5 two speed clippers. I went for the best they had in stock. I think they came with a #10 blade, which is used pretty much to take them down to the skin.
I think, (I forgot to check) the second blade I bought was the 5F, that is what I used most of the time. I still use the #10 for some of his belly and "hygiene cut" I also use it at the bottom of his feet, to keep the dirt tracking down.
When I first started, I was using plastic combs that clip over the blade to adjust the lenght of the cut, 1/8" to 1 1/4". They were a waste of money.
Don't worry the first couple of times, the dog will look funny, but you will get the hang of it real quick.
Holy crap! I can't believe MEN are talking about
this kind of stuff!
Well at least hes still calling it a - 1/2 lab 1/2 poodle ..... and not a "labradoodle". When I hear guys say that makes me think they are cosmo drinking soccer fans that need a manhood slap. Man card should be revoked the minute you adopt that term.
Nothing wrong with getting the dog groomed though. Good for the dog and good for the house. I have 2. cost about $100 every two months.
