Default Toyota Pulls The Plug On The New Tundra

For three months anyway.

According to the news, they are closing the factory in TX for three months to allow demand to catch up with the supply.

Our local dealers have the Tundra's advertised in the paper for $10K off MSRP.

I'm sure shrewd buyers can still do better...

This follows large factory rebates which have been available on the Tundra since about three months after the factory started producing Toyota's version of a "full-size" truck.

The news also said that Toyota will start building the Prius in the U.S.

Maybe they will offer up a TX version of the Prius which will have bull-horns mounted on the front hood???

They will build the Prius in a MS. factory that was to be a Tundra plant. They are doing the same thing the detroit outfits are trying to do but they don't have the UAW on there back so they are quicker in changing plans to meet the market.

The new Toyota plant that's being built in MS is 12 miles from where I live. It was being built to mfg the Highlander and they are switching it over to the Puris. I have a very good friend who is in white collar management for the new plant and he told me it will be building the Puris 24/7 and maybe another hybrid model. I have several clients who are Toyota dealers and they are taking deposits on Puris for delivery in 12 months. I have a Tundra 4x4 great truck lots of power, grat ride...terrible gas mileage

We've owned 2 Tundras and love them due to the reliability and fit and finish but as soon as I saw the 'new body style' I knew it was a mistake. Looks too much like an American made body style and lost the Toyota feel and others I've spoken with about it had similar feelings..

Well thats too bad. Hopefuly the TX plant will reopen.

That said, making Prius makes sense. I might even be tempted to look at one. But . . . why do they have to be so darn ugly.

Couldn't they put the super fantastic hybrid motor under a better looking body?

At this point, the only hybrid that I would even consider for myself is the Ford Escape but I'm not really into it much either.

And BMW is planning on moving Z4 production back to Germany and making SUV's in the Greer plant. I wonder if they are rethinking that?Glen E--any inside news that way?

Why? Because a group they support that dose tons of good stuff may have one project on the books that may effect your ability to drive on a beach?

I have not looked at all the links but all the owners around here were able to cut beach driving down to a minimum at certain places and get it banned completely in others. They did it all under the guise of the threatened Sea Turtle. When in reallity it had little to do with the Sea Turtle and more about them being eliteist azzes...

I'm not real sure why you'd want to drive on the beach.

I guess the same reason some people boat and others dont. There is nothing better than I ride on the beach in the evening. If you rinse the inderside your vehicle after your ride there is no problem.

NP Joe....I was referring to Hatteras Island. Not all beaches need to be driven on IMO. But some beaches it does make sense.....

No - the Prius was originally designed to be marketed to people who actually like their cars fuel efficient AND ugly. It makes them feel that much better about themselves - all that self sacrifice and all.....

and who & what are XXL SUV's & pickups marketed for? The Joe Schmoe that wants to commute in a F250 Diesel Super Duty with 6" exhause pipes & a set of brass balls hanging in the rear. Don't kid yourself & say it's for the .005% that acutually use them for towing or the .0005% that actually take them off road. They are marketed to the guy that wants to chest thump & drive a BFT, or to the woman that wants to own the road.

(no, I don't drive a Hybrid. I have a fast car that sucks up fuel, but I don't kid myself about why I have it.)

Just for the record... they are not just for closing the beaches of Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreation Area to vehicles, but to people in general. The closures they managed to get in place with the help of a district court judge apply to pedestrians as well. Some of the best beaches in the Seashore are now off limits to humans. Cape Point - arguably the best surf fishing spot on the east coast has been closed for months as a result of this mess.

Essentially, they are trying to turn the island into a bird / turtle sanctuary. The birds involved are not endangered, nor are they really native to the area (piping plover.) They did not 1st appear there until 1960. Audubon is also working with other groups to block the new Bonner bridge replacement project. The replacement is sorely needed as the current bridge has a rating of safety rating of 4 out of 100. If you remember that bridge in Minnesota that collapsed in '07, that was rated a 27.

I am certainly not going to put all of this on Toyota, their $20M donation to Toyota probably makes good business sense, but it should make you think twice. The folks at Audubon I know of have been (putting it as nicely as possible) less than honorable in their quest to keep people out of our park.

Sorry for the rant, not directed at you, Joe - here is a link if you want to read more about this fun stuff: http://www.islandfreepress.org/CatBe...essIssues.html

One more thing, if you want to help take back the beach, contact your reps to co-sponsor Senate Bill 3113 and its companion House Bill 6233. Since this is a national park, we need nationwide support.

I am so disgusted with how things went down at Hattaras that I cancelled my plans to buy a Tundra for me and a Tacoma for my son.
