Default Palm Beach County $10 Boat Ramp Launch Fees?

As if $5.00+ gas next year won't be bad enough, Palm Beach Post today reports that county commissioners will add a $10 boat launching fee for weekends and holidays at saltwater ramps. This is supposed to happen next year.
WTF? Did anyone else catch this?

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/co...svc=7&cxcat=76

Proof again that while the county was wallowing in dough before the housing slump they didn't bother to plan ahead and save some of the millions that were rolling in for a rainy day.

This is a move that is consistent with the boo hoo crowd running the democratic government in Palm Beach. They want you to believe that they need to increase fees due to the Republican tax cut on prperty taxes. This is called payback. They were making wind fall profits over the last 5-10 years and yes they blew on all the "save the bullfrog" programs that lined their pockets.

I don't mind paying to launch. It cuts down on the crowds at the ramps because a bunch of people launch somewhere else...

Im not against a modest fee for lauching if it means more ramps but if Palm Beach County accepted money from the State and the Florida Inland Navigation District (AKA FIND) I dont think it is legal for them to be charging a fee, but I am not positive

I hope that doesnt happen around where i live. When i go out for the day it only costs like 20-30 $$$ for me due to a small boat and motor (woot woot go 40hp suzuki lol) so $10 more would be a big % my costs.

Pinellas County, FL (Clearwater/St Petersburg near Tampa), has had a $5 "parking fee" for a few years now. It is in effect 24/7, no breaks during the week. You can buy a yearly pass for $100. Thier argument was boaters should pay for the services that we use, in addition to our taxes. My question was how come the soccer Moms aren't paying to park when they take the kids to the parks and playgorunds?? I don't use those services and don't want to pay for them.......

I guess I can look at this from two angles:
> Pros:
- I've been getting off easy to date since others have been paying for a while
- It's just $10... a drop in the bucket in terms of my overall boating costs
- It might reduce crowds a little at the ramp... but not likely
- As a boater I guess I should pay for using the ramps (although I thought
my taxes already did)

> Cons:
- Just another tax on top of all the others that will be wasted by the county
and not used to build more ramps or improve/expand existing ones
- If this fee is enforced at all 10(?) or so PBC saltwater ramps, how much will it
cost to implement and sustain this initiative? Basically, will it make money?
- Will this limit ramp access at night or early morning times on the weekend? I
don't want to drive up to a ramp at 4:30am on Sunday morning and find
a closed gate because the "ramp attendant" is not on duty yet.

Time to quit whining, pay my $10, launch the boat and go fishing. Oh crap... that reminds me, I need to buy a new fishing license. Doah!

I really don't understand why "we the people" don't fight these arbritrary fees (read:taxes) at all anymore.

By the time all the pols are done, we'll all be lucky to keep a dime on the dollar.

Item one, stand up in public and make your elected officials justify and taxes, fees, etc.

Item two, you really don't want to know what guys in Dade county are paying..... for ramps and parking lots where if you're lucky you don't get ripped off while you're on the water and if you're really lucky you don't find any dings in either tow vehicle or trailer at the end of the day....

Item three, you don't know how fortunate you are if that's the first time you're hearing about ramp fees....

Doesn't the money have to come from somewhere? If we cut taxes, and keep the same services, then user fees are a logical solution. Counties all across the state are raising fees and cutting services due to decreased funding. And isn't there another property tax cut headed for the ballot this fall? We all want the goods we just don't want to pay for it....

I have been using the Boynton Beach ramp since 1990. What I noticed when the fees went into affect was that the docks and parking were inproved and better maintained. In Boynton, you can pay $50 for a sticker once a year - which keeps the price under control. Honestly, I am a very "good" Republican that beleives that the governemnt should undergoe huge budget cuts. But, I am happy to pay $50 per year to have a high-quality boat park that is well maintained. Just my $0.02.

Ask for a receipt. One of our lake towns charges for weekends and holidays only. A couple years ago a college-age kid sat down next to the sign and started collecting the fee, said it was just changed to be week-days. I cant remember how long it happened before some one checked into it.

Man I hate to be critical but you are the kind of voter politicians LOVE. Your whole assumption that government has our best interest at heart and spends OUR taxpayer money judiciously is why most incumbents keep getting re-elected. In your comment you never once question HOW these politicians and bureaucrats spend our money. the fact is there is rampant waste, overpaid/under-worked employees, duplication of services, exorbitant overtime and sweet contracts and benefits which seems to escape the average citizen. If you don't believe it just read this recent post [at bottom of page] taken from the Houston Chronicle which posted the exact salary of their local government employees.. OVER 250 make in excess of $100, 000 and the top guy, a school administrator makes $442,000. That is TAXPAYER money with no accountability. The salary is not tied to any real performance evaluations [ " Oh Bob, I see you were not late for work this year...OK good Job, here is your raise"] or revenue increase or decrease. If the budget is tight because of falling property tax collection then instead of cutting staff or benefits, [god-forbid] they think of another tax to lay on the stupid, gullible public..and like sheep we pay....and pay..

check this out..

Oceanluvr just summed it up nicely. There is much waste in the government and cuts should be made at all levels.

If you were a creditor would you loan money to someone with a finacial track record similar to that of our government?

If not, then why would you encourage them to take those funds from you with neither a promise of repayment nor a commitment to fiscal responsibility given in return?
