I dont really know the answer but a buddy of mine has a small plane and I asked him how much he'd charge to fly me to the OBX (about 30 miles by air, max) and he said no problem, he wouldnt charge me for such a short trip if I wanted to go some time instead of drive. I said well then, how about a trip to Florida/Bahamas and he just laughed and said "Cha CHING!!!!"

It varies by make/model, etc...but I fly a Piper Cherokee 235 with an IO540 Continental...235Hp, cruises at about 135-140 knots, I burn about 12 gph in cruise.

Really depends on weight and altitude but 15-20 mpg would be close.

My father had a Mooney 201 that would cruise around 180 mph. He burned about 10 gph so that would mean about 18 mpg. However, even though it was a 4 seater it was very limited in payload.

There is more to it than that. First, you aren't travelling the roads so your distance is shorter. But, on the other hand the FAA doesn't make you tear down your car motor on certain annual/hourly schedule.

150 will burn about 5gph at roughly 100mph so that gives you 20 mpg. You can also burn regular unleaded (no methanol) in those things as well.

Don't you get better mileage if you coast down hill?

Our C90 gets about 36 gph. All total thats about $5k to the Bahamas and back but it sure beats commercial. 10 trips planned between now and August 1st... that stings!

It's been while but I think the Cessna 150/152 burns about 5gph ruising at 100knots.

Maybe with one person aboard, but with 2, the 150 can't make 100 kts, no way. My Hawk XP with a 195hp Lycoming is a 125 kt plane at 10.2 gph...

I get 15 statute miles per gallon in my cessna 182. About 65% cruise power, not....!!!!! but I like to think along those lines anyway, makes it easier to justify to the wife. In real world terms, when you factor in taxi and takeoff, it's closer to 9-10 mile per gallon, but they are straight line miles most of the time.

The second engine takes you to the site of the crash.

I fly a Piper Cherokee 180. 10gph at 120kts. Winds aloft play a big factor on mileage.

Seems there's quite a few foolish bush pilots.I don't imagine floats help your glide angle alot either.
