Default Tile work completed -- Bathroom finished!!!

For those of you that were interested in the tile work I was having trouble with, here's a synopsis of the projects.

Also, thanks for all the advice on drilling!!!!

We started out the bathroom projects taking a stab at redoing our dated powder room, ahhh, the 70s!

Cultured marble tile, new vanity, toilet and fixtures sure perked it up.

Cool new faucet.

Now that the powder room is done, and turned out pretty nice, my wife decided it was time for us to really roll up our sleeves and tackle the small master bath, should be easy since it's just replacing some tile and a few fixtures... RIGHT, that was January 20!

Day 1, with the wall tile coming off easily it was now time for DEMO of the cast iron tub, it's "Sledge Time"...

The next weekend, finally have the tub out and working on the floor tile. You don't see it in these pictures, but the tile was set into some sort of mortar and packed with a metal mesh. It was a bear to say the least and full of surprises...

Anything look funny? Yep, no support beams under half the tub or the toilet!!!! Also, you don't see it here since the plumbing is already out, but the outlet for the toilet actually flowed slightly up hill before hitting the wall, nice...

We called in for professional help on redoing the plumbing, adding structural support and installing the shower bed.

Now installing the sub floor and Hardi Backer

Shower liner and wall board installed, waiting for the mortar bed.

Mortar bed and floor tile in

Shower floor tile installed, working on remaining wall board and ceiling vent/light

We missed a lot of pictures here, but now all the tile is in, time to install the shower door.

This is where it took 2 hours to drill one 3/16th hole in the porcelain tile using various carbide bits that are designed for tile. I ordered a diamond tipped drill bit and completed the other five holes in 10-15 minutes each. Fortunately I had an apprentice to help me out here!

Completed shower with Kohler door installed. Check out the bench, it's very cool and had me nervous, but it holds just fine.

Another shot of the bench

Nook and soap shelf, still need to install a holder for the hand shower, but I was tired of drilling for a while!

Floor, curb and tile trim. Still need to finish most of the caulking work, and some of the grout clean up, but that won't take more than an hour.

All finished except for some details, like hardware on the new solid cherry cabinet. Still need to hang new mirror or medicine chest, undecided on what it will be at this point, but glad to have a usable bathroom after 4 months!!!!!

I think I may retire from the bathroom remodeling business, that was a LOT of work and more than I ever thought it would be. But the wife is happy and it's completed with three weeks to spare before baby number 2 shows up!

Nice work, Dan! Looks real good. I like that floor tile

But there's only one problem.

Since you did such good work, it's only a matter of time before the better half says "You know, the kitchen really needs some updating...."

Thankis PostOpus, i do feel proud of how it turned out, especially since I've never tiled anything in my life. And yes, you nailed it right on the head. We already bought all the fixtures and toilet for the guset bath (three months ago), but fortunately we are out of time with the new baby coming and all! I'm sure I'll be knee deep in it again come this winter.

Yeah, this was a HUGE time suck, but I haven't been on the water since the doc said Ingrid couldn't travel for five weeks before "due day". Probably won't even get the boat in the water until September!!!!! How's fishing been?

Very nice work. It is hard to believe that was your first tile work. We are coming down the home stretch on our master bath remodel so I feel your pain. Going home tonight to grout the shower wall and floor. Thanks for sharing.

Nice work Dan! When are you coming over my house??? I have our main bathroom that represents the 1950-1960 era

(Heck, I just need someone to clean my lower bathroom in the in law suite on a regular basis. All the neighborhood kids use it and we have found that if we dont check it every day, we find some surprises that we dont like to find )

Nice workmanship. Congrats.

Now go pull that white label off the flex hose for the toilet.....you will not go to jail if you remove it.

That is a first class job.

When I was in the business I made more money from homeowners who started a project and got in over their head.

Congrats!

FLScout, thanks and good luck finishing your job up... and don't call me!

B-Faithful -- Gee, I hope it wasn't me! ha ha. I can easily fix that problem, DEADBOLT!

Tireless -- I like the label, I keep them on all my hats too!

Thubert -- Believe me, I was ready to toss in the towel a number of times, but we were very fortunate to make the acquaintance of the plumbers who did the plumbing work. They were very willing to talk me through things on the phone and one of them even met me with his panel van at Home Depot on a Saturday morning to help me haul the plywood and Hardi Backer to the house. You just don't find folks like that around much.

Intimidating is right! The intimidation began when I took the first swing with the sledge against the side of the old tub. Man, it sounded like I was going to crash through the floor. At one point a big chunk of iron flew off the tub and imbedded itself six inches into the drywall of my sons room. Fortunately it was behind a bookcase and he wasn't in there!

And yes, it does feel good having done it myself, I just need to not make a habit of it!!
