Default Boston Whaler

Boston Whaler plans to lay off about 250 employees from its Edgewater, Fla., plant.
The company notified the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation of its intent last Friday, according to a spokesman with the agency. By law, companies are required to notify the agency of upcoming layoffs.
The layoffs are scheduled to take place between June 30 and July 28.
“In managing our business, Brunswick is — and has been — producing fewer boats and engines to reduce marine pipeline inventories in the face of continued weak retail demand for boats,” Brunswick spokesman Dan Kubera said this morning.
“As part of this effort, we have been taking downtime at all of our plants at various times this year. Indeed, we will be suspending production at most of our U.S.-based fiberglass manufacturing plants during July,” he added.
These actions are part of managing a cyclical marine business, according to Kubera.
In March, Sea Ray, another Brunswick brand, announced plans to lay off 400 workers at its Merritt Island, Fla., production facility. Those layoffs were scheduled to begin May 28 and run through July 31.

So who's next, Grady-white, Parker, everyone in the boat building business??

Just for clarification, Boston Whaler shuts down every summer for 2 weeks. This year, because of sluggish sales and extra inventory in the pipeline, they will be closing for 4 weeks. The employees involved will be brought back in August to begin production of the 2009 models.

It is unfortunate for the people involved, but it would seem silly to continue to produce boats when there is already a surplus of inventory.

The good news is there are some great deals out there on Whalers right now. Just call a dealer and ask.

Folks know a good boat when they see it---or should I say experienced folks know. Whaler has been around since 1958. Weathered a lot of storms. They will be fine as well as other top teir boating companies. Even if they all have to adjust, these times will weed out the companies that are lesser quality. The cream rises and always will.

That's pretty much the same thing up here. I just hope the value holds, I'll be putting my 170 up for sale in September, I'm planning on moving up to a Dauntless 200
