Default Federal Licenses for Recreational Salt Water Fishing

So, what do y'all think of the proposed federal licensing of recreational salt water fishing?

Good idea?

I'm on the fence. If anything, there needs to be Federal oversight of commercial fishing if anything. The fact that some states allow gillnetting of gamefish for example.

Delaware now requires a state license for salt water - not sure if this is requied for offshore. If other states start it and the Federal license would serve for state licenses, I would not have a problem. But I would not want to have to buy a Federal for offshore and a state for inshore.

what about those of us that have lifetime state licenses? my guess is that states are not going to give up the extra revenue from selling licenses and give it to the feds.

The government works through politics rather than economics, fairness, or even logic. Hence, we need an HMS permit to catch one skipjack tuna. What a complete joke when you consider everything that has happened historically, and continues to this day, in the commercial tuna fishing industry.

Just read more about this. The funds from this program go into the TREASURY. I will not sign up for this, good luck to them enforcing this upon me.

It would seem to be unconstitutional as all powers not specifically granted to the federal government are left the states and to the people.

It would probably wind up in court as a states rights issue, lots of state revenue to be lost if wildlife licensing goes federal.

I also agree with the previous poster, the feds would only make a mess of it. They don't have enough $ to to run govt and fund important programs, national parks and defense as is. Where is this magical well of money going to come from to create an entire recreational federal wildlife fishing license agency? Don't tell me from the fees because it won't be enough.

Additionally, the federal govt only has jurisdiction over interstate commerce, if the commercial fisherman operate only in one state it would seem that regulating power would be left to the state as well.

They already changed the law in Texas requiring a state license for offshore fishing. It's just a money grab and one more nail in the coffin of recreational fishing. One of my "persuaders" for getting friends to go and chip in with expenses was that they didn't have to blow $50 on a license. Throw in the bull$hit snapper limits, the bull$hit shortened snapper season, the bull$hit price of gas... we're toast.

The bull$hit commercial fisherman are loving every bit of it as they fish 24x7x365 and get $25 a pound for snapper.

From linked article "Commercial fishermen are all licensed and held to rigorous reporting standards for every trip." Was that an attempt at humor?
