Default Why...

...doesn't the government mandate a temporary reduced speed limit on interstates while oil prices continue to rise?

Maybe (probably) I am missing the big picture...but in the vehicles I own gas mileage jumps dramatically when speed is reduced from 75 to 60 mph...as much as 15%.

Seems to me that would be an easy way to put an immediate dent in demand.

I think they should lower the speed limit in Mass to 65 mph.

"Interstate" and "60 mph" should not be used in the same sentence. You bump it down to 60 and save the world...just stay in the right lane while doing it.

Because it won't have any effect.

People will not slow down.

Why are you asking the government to do anything about the price of a globally traded commodity? Just stop buying oil. That's right, you can't. Dependence is a bitch, isn't it?

Independence. You gave it away, some of it you had little choice in doing, most of it you had every choice.

Butt Hay, keep complaining about it on the internet, that always gets good results.

Those that want to drive slow are welcome to do so. Please stay in the slow lane and out of the way

Because lowering the speed 20% increases the time spent driving on the highway by 20%, and probably more, because there would be more traffic on the highway on average.

You save a little under $2 an hour, but spend 15 minutes more for every hour you drive currently. Is your time worth more than $8 an hour?

God Lord man, why do you need the gov't to tell you to slow down if you want to burn less fuel? Better question....why should I be forced to save fuel if I don't want to save fuel? This isn't real complicated.....slow the fuk down and stay out of my way by getting off the road when you see an eight thousand pound Excursion ripping down the middle of the highway. Driving in the middle of the road gives me a "Moses' Complex" as I watch the cars in front of me part like the Red Sea.

Saw the hearings yesterday with the oil company exexs and they mentioned that the demand in the US is way down from last year. But.......the prices have gone up. Guess that supply and demand thing is not all that accurate anymore.

Start drilling in the US and stop relying on overseas for our crude.

70% of the cost for a dollar of gas is crude. 16% for refining. 12% for taxes. According to what they claim.

Forget the speed limit. How about mandate that anytime anyone intentionally litters from a vehicle, they get two years in jail? In addition, if you throw out a cigarette butt, you get your lips cut off. If it's still lit and hits another vehicle, you get your lips and both feet cut off. Keep our highways clean.

Tireless,

Middle of the road; flashing sets of light; high speed.

You have learned the Snapper Head way very, very well Grasshopper; yet you lack the final sphere of knowledge that will bring you to Interstate Nirvana:

The right shoulder, high speed, quasi-offroad insanestyle

It may also be substitued with the middle of the road, high speed swerving idiotstyle, however, this can only be truly accoplished while swinging a set of stainless props back and forth toward the unenlightened whom you have just passed.

Focus grasssmoke, er, grasshopper. Focus.
