Well, after almost a year we got our house in Virginia sold 3 weeks ago.
What a journey the last few weeks have been.
When we went to contract on the Virginia house we started looking for homes here in San Antonio - on the Northeast and East side of town. For almost 8 weeks we looked at dozens of houses with distance to Randolph AFB being a major factor as well as wanting some land bigger than a postage stamp in a quiet, semi-rural area.
We found a beautiful house we put an offer on, it was accepted and we were supposed to close on April 24th. All looked good.. That was until the deal fell through after the appraisal came back $35k low! Go figure, we offered the guy what he paid 2 years ago - this had to be the result of the subprime fallout. It caught every one of us completely flat-footed.
So with our heads down low, we go to find another house. And as luck would have it, we did the very next weekend (around April 20th) and after a few days of deliberation, we decided to put an offer on a house that we liked and had been on the market almost 180 days. So I call my agent and he says "great, let me get the paperwork together. " He calls back about an hour later and says "you're not gonna believe this - the sellers received an offer this morning and they accepted" Unbelievable... I feel like we had a bad cloud on us now!
So we look and look and my wife, Caroline says she wants to go out and look at a very nice new area being built in a rural area where you either wait to build with a 6-8 month lead time or get lucky if one is built, but the previous buyer fell through for whatever reason. So we go out there and lo and behold, there was a single house that met our needs, has a decent size yard and it's quiet. It met all my other needs too (faced west, side entry garage, etc. - I have a few particulars I look for as major plusses) Apparently the previous buyer fell through because they couldn't get their house sold and had to back out. This is a totally new construction house about 2 weeks from being completed and while it's our third house purchase, it's our first "new" house. So we made an offer and the builder accepted!
I gotta tell ya - Being relatively homeless for a year is something I don't wish on anyone. Now when I say "homeless" we aren't living in a van down by the river, but we have been living with my in-laws with Caroline and I having a 12x12 bedroom we call home. Meghan has a little bedroom and we're taken care of. I really couldn't ask for more, but it's still tough and I know we aren't functioning like we normally were. Probably borderline depressed - but there is a light at the end of the tunnel (I just hope it's not a train).
I'm ready to have my own house, phone, cable, living room, TV, etc.. I cant' thank my in-laws enough, but stick a fork in me - I'm done!

It takes a real man to live in his in-laws house for a full year, no matter how nice they are. We are looking at somewhat similar situation with our house which we are currently trying to sell. If it sells too soon, we may be forced to stay at my father-in-law's house with his wife, he's in a nursing home. No matter how nice the people are, it's not your home and you know it. Hang in there, glad to see you found a house after this amount of time.

Two questions. Are there any stumps that need to be pulled? Does it already have a shed? Just wonderin.

DrJim - 5/5/2008 4:49 PM Whats the big attraction of facing west?
*
Sitting on the front porch watching the sunset.
True Dr Jim - the other reason is the back yard is shaded starting around 3 PM and therefore is cooling off during the hottest part of the day. Go out on a 95 degree Texas day and the area will be pleasant with a nice breeze - caused by the shaded and cooled area. The only thing better than having your house face West is to have it face South so the shortest sides of the house are receiving the direct sunlight - Energy saving..
Shag - No stumps!

NEW house - GREAT - you can fix it up the way YOU and your family WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Landscaping "from scratch" can be FUN! Takes a while, but you really DO "reap what you sew"! At least you'll be PLANTING bushes rather than trying to YANK them OUT! (Shag - that was CRUEL! - but funny as he$$!).
Just remember - NO "above-ground" pools, NO used tires in the FRONT yard, NO pink shutters/doors, NO "unauthorized" mailboxes, NO washing the boat, except AFTER DARK!
And "NO use of telescopes at more than a 45deg. angle from due North" - oops, that was MY neighborhood "problem"!
Enjoy - you folks DESERVE it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats Chris, best of luck to you and yours in the new home... Brandy new is great too.
Long ago I lived with my inlaws while we were having a home built, wife and I got the finished basement (pretty nice actually). Only problem was my mother in law, the best cook I ever knew. I was running at the time about 30 miles a week, I needed to put more time into my workouts to burn the carbs she could cook me!
Congrats on the new house!
Sounds like your stay with the in-laws was short. We lived with my mother-in-law for four years when I quit my job and went back to college. Several years later she found herself in a bad financial situation due to health problems, so she moved in with us for two years. I actually love my mother-in-law but SIX YEARS!
