If case this can help anyone else that gets bombarded by credit mailings.

The Do Not Call Registry was well communicated when it came out as a way to stop phone solicitations. I was listening to a radio finance show this afternoon and a guy was talking about 1-888-5OPTOUT. It is an automated system set up by the four credit reporting agencies that allows you to stop them sharing your credit with marketing companies. That is the source of all those pre-approved credit card, mortgage and loan mailings.
You will need to give your bame, address and SSN so that they can look up your record. Don't worry about giving them all of this - they already have it all!

I will be doing this for all adults in our household this evening.

Maybe ask them first to give the last 4 digits of your SS to verify they "already have it".

We did it years ago and get very little junk mail, including the credit card offers. Not only does it cut down on junk, it helps protect you from people who will fill out YOUR credit card apps and steal your identity.

Go right ahead...not for me. I'm not the type that calls unknown phone numbers and gives all my personal info and SSN.

Call me a whacky paranoid but thats just how I am. Not trying to stop you though.
