Anyone on here using it? I'm researching and wanting to find a PC that'll be efficient for video editing and photo editing. I've heard that Vista is a pain.....

timebandit - 12/29/2007 9:01 PM It sucks. I ripped it out.
Ditto... I paid a tech $180 to remove it and install XP Pro.. If you decide to do it anyway BE SURE to research compatabilities with your software AND drivers for printers etc..... Vista is not ready for release yet.
Ralph, I have no experience personally with Vista (except for "fixing" a friend's new laptop where he ignored all of the warnings and tried to upgrade to Vista Premium without paying...thanks MS Tech Support for giving me the key for free), but from what I've heard I'll stick with XP Pro (or the venerable Win 2000 Pro for my older boxes)....
Brian, I've had to "wipe out" several Vista systems from users that weren't satisfied. I believe XP Pro is the way to go. Does Adobe Photoshop CS3 have video & photo editing capabilities? Just haven't had time to research CS3 yet....
We use MAC systems at the shop for these tasks. Just not a fan of MAC

I have picked out my new PC, (custom built) and only have to decide on the OS. Have read a lot lately about Vista and most of the comments are not good.
Google, problems with MS Vista , . There were 2,360,00 results when I checked it earlier.
As XP sp2 has corrected major flaws from the original XP, I think I have made my decision. Also there is a sp3 due out in 2008. Probably take a few years for MS to iron out the bugs in Vista.
December 26, 2007 (Computerworld) -- Microsoft Corp. has warned Windows Home Server users not to edit files stored on their backup systems with several of its programs, including Vista Photo Gallery and Office's OneNote and Outlook, as well as files generated by popular finance software such as Quicken and QuickBooks.
"When you use certain programs to edit files on a home computer that uses Windows Home Server, the files may become corrupted when you save them to the home server," Microsoft said in a support document posted last week.
The document went on to list the software, which includes Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, OneNote 2003, OneNote 2007, Outlook 2007, Microsoft Money 2007 and SyncToy 2.0 Beta. Others programs, however, may also corrupt files stored on a home server powered by Microsoft's operating system.
"Additionally, there have been customer reports of issues with Torrent applications, with Intuit Quicken and with QuickBooks program files," the document said. "Until an update for Windows Home Server is available, we recommend that [you] do not use the programs that are listed to save or to edit program-specific files that are stored on a Windows Home Server-based system."
Microsoft blamed the problem on a glitch within Windows Home Server's shared folders. The company said it had reproduced the bug and would post any new information to the document tagged as KB946676.
"Our development team is working full-time through the holidays to diagnose and address this issue," claimed an anonymous posting last Thursday to the Microsoft blog dedicated to Windows Home Sever.
Windows Home Server, which was unveiled nearly a year ago by Chairman Bill Gates at the Consumer Electronics Show, is a heavily modified version of Windows Server 2003 designed for consumers and small businesses. Hewlett-Packard Co. launched the first hardware powered by Windows Home Server, its $599 and $749 MediaSmart Servers, last month and is now shipping systems to customers.
Vista is theworst OS I have ever used. I wanted a computer for pictures and a lot of video editing and this is the area where Mac's just shine like no other. The iMovie program is so easy to use and is so far ahead of most of the PC based video editing software. I just spent $130 for Premiere Elements and Photoshop for my XP based PC and then my nephew came over with is Macbook and showed me the OS and photo and video editing software. Man the Mac is easy to use, fast, etc. Needless to say my Macbook arrives on Wednesday. Unless you are a pro at websites the iMac account is the way to go. Building websites, hosting pictures and editing video is a breeze.
If you are really looking for a computer, OS or program for video editing you really need to check out the Mac.
I'd like to hear, SPECIFICALLY, what people "hate" about Vista? I have it nmy new XPS 410 desktop and have had no problems whatsoever. I run my business on this computer too using design software, accounting software, video and photography editing software, too.

Maybe you can help me here. Are you able to track a package on the FedEx or UPS site with Vista? I know a small business owner who has spent hours on the phone with Staples, Kinkos, FedEx and UPS and all of these companies say that their tracking website does not support Vista. Is this true?

Yeah. I have tracked numerous packages, with UPS, FedEx and even DHL. I haven't had a problem with anything, yet.
I've been on vista for about 3 months now, it was standard on the new dell desktop that I bought. I went through everything when I got it and ran every update possible and got the OS layout to my liking before I installed any additional software. Then came the MS office suite (2003 pro) and the updates for it, and then everything else I needed. So far I haven't had any issues at all, and have really enjoyed the change in interface. The organization seems to be better in Vista than in XP. Granted, I used to be a really heavy computer use, anymore I am basically just checking email & getting online for the most part, with a little bit of photo editing from time to time.

For one thing AutoCAD will not run on Vista w/o an expensive upgrade from Autodesk. I'll probably off load Vista & run XP.

It's much easier to complain about it without having any real reasons to back those complaints up--you know, like referencing a tech article about a completely different OS.
There are some issues with using older hardware on it that new drivers haven't been/won't be written. And you're going to need a more powerful PC for it work as designed on (more RAM, bigger HD etc), but I think every newversion of windows has required that. And some older programs may not run without applying Windows XP like permissions to (right click on the executable and go to the compatibility tab). I understand some other progarms won't run even after doing that, but I haven't run into any. I have also seen problems when logging into Windows 2000/2003 non native mode domains, with GPO excution and other administrative tasks. Aside from that, and it being a somewhat different interface ( I don't particularly care for the "save to location" function) I haven't seen that many problems.
I don't think it's particularly "hard" to use, certainly no harder than learning a completely different interface, likeif you were going to buy a Mac. You can make it look as much like Windows 95 as you like with a few customizations.
I run vista & xp, old and new periperals and the verdict is:
all the mac commercials are true!
If you go vista, just get at least 2gigs memory - runs fine.
If you run any old HP printers, they have poor support for vista drivers and don't even
intend on updating them to work right. The drivers they have in place to support
their older printers (mine is 2 yrs old) run the printers but leave it with limited functionality.
actually, I shouldn't single out HP - any older periperal will most likely loose
functionality or not be usablea t all depending how old it is.
so if you are starting from scratch, with 2 gigs of memory, you will
most likely love vista.
If you have older peripherals, you will hate vista.
If you nuy new stuff, just make sure it is made for vista.
I have had Vista running on a laptop for about a year & a half. I like it and see no major problems with it assuming you have adequate hardware and your apps are supported. No different than any previous version of Windows there.
I would not buy a new computer with XP. It will be obsolete in a year or two and you will wish you had gone ahead and gotten Vista.
