Random Quote: The solution to most problems is to first go fishing
Christmas morning. I have been adamant about this over the years for no good reason, other than to prolong the anticipation of the kids for that morning. Tradition carries on to another generation. Certain holiday traditions have a way of carrying forward, and when followed, make the day feel right.

We used to do both. On Eve, The family would meet for Christmas eve for dinner at one of the family homes, usually the grandparents where we'd open our family presents and we could take one of our chosing from beneath our tree before we left. Then we would have our home tree on Christmas day with the additional "From Santa" presents that weren't there the night before..
It was and still is fun...

hows santa gonna come down the chimney before Xmas eve?
sometimes, one(the one that mom and dad got) on Christmas eve then "santas" presents on Christmas morning.
Both, we open several gifts from each other Christmas Eve, and the big "from Santa" presents Christmas morning. The Christmas Eve gifts often spill the beans for Santa, though. Last year I opened a box of ammo for a rifle I didn't have.....yet. Wife said that looking back, the ammo shoulda' gone in my stocking.
