Clam, yes, Wheel chair bound with no use of you arms and legs.

Or just home from war and need to be retrained due to injuries.

Lester

that is what disability and SSI is for not welfare

so who should be eligible for long term welfare?

I can't believe this thread hasn't been sent to The Bilge, but I see that as a good thing.

To all those who think welfare is necessary, go back 100 years and find me cases where unemployed or disadvantaged people were starving to death in this country. Families and the church used to take care of those down on their luck, and those who took advantage of their generosity were very humble and quick to repay the kindness once they got back on their feet.

Now that the government is up to their ears in it, there is no end in sight. Problem is if they end it now, there will be riots like you've never seen, and lots of politicians will have to look to hard working Americans to keep them in office as opposed to loading these folks up on busses and taking them to a free meal while voting for them.

I am all for welfare , just PROVE to us that you need it.

And the more children you have out of wedlock THE LESS YOU GET
In NY it's out of controll.
I'm in healthcare and one day noticed that this young mom had 3 kids all with different last names. I made a comment to my secretary about it and she replied don't you know why?

It actually turns out that if a mom registers kids with different last names, you get 3 separate welfare checks. If the children all have the same last name you get one check for the whole family. (guess which one is more).

I had to schedule a follow up appointment and the mom told me the earliest she could come back is in 2 months because they are all going down to Dominican Republic for the winter! WTF!!

Honestly, if I ever reach that point in life, I would hope that all of my focus would be surviving for the time being, and doing everything in my power to change my current situation. That in itself can be a full time job, and should be. It is pathetic IMO for someone to be satisfied with living off of the sweat and hard work of the rest of society if there is something that they can do to change their plight. To live like that is a burden on us all, and should be completely unacceptable.
See, there's that looking down on others attitude I was talking about earlier. Exactly, how is this a personal burden on you? This doesn't effect your job description at all does it? Does it say that you have to work a little harder or longer if the welfare list gets bigger? (see, I know sarcasm too) The fact is you saw someone that you feel is beneath you that has a nicer car than you and it got your panties in a wad.
Now, while your attitude may be piss poor about individuals, your attitude towards work is what sets you apart from those people. You should be happy about that at least. Instead of focusing on what others have and if you agree with their lifestyle, try focusing on what you have and who you are. You'll probably find your attitude change for the better and be a little happier.

how you figure? I could give two sh!+'s about what anyone does or doesn't have, how hard they work for it, or anything else. However when they are using my dime fund it, I have a major problem. That is exactly what is happening, everywhere in the US, and you (assuming you pay lots of taxes like I do) and I are VICTIMS. I have no problem helping folks out on a temp basis, but if you screw me by abusing the system, you are scum, plain and simple.

How do I figure? By you telling everyone out in cyberland that you feel these people shouldn't have premium cable, or expensive clothes or good cars that proves you care about what people have. You feel you have a right to tell them what they should or shouldn't have. After all it's on our dime right? Yes, I do pay alot of taxes, more than I feel is fair. However, I'm not pissed at the people that has less than me about it. I'm pissed at the elected officials that are worse crooks than the people you think are scum. Does it do any good to complain about how welfare folks live? Only thing I can do is vote for the people that I feel can change things for the better. Making people get jobs won't change the amount of money you get on your check.

I won't say much on this issue. A new caddy and using food stamps? Perhaps they did something illegal to get the caddy, but it would be hard for me to see someone who could even pay insurance on a new caddy be able to hide the money from the gov for very long. If they a making the money illegally, well more power to them, in the end, illegal money comes at a high price and hard time. A 60k vehicle and food stamps, come on, there's more to the picture that we don't see. Maybe grandma's groceries or something.

When a person advances an opinion here, it is akin to jumping into a tank full of sharks with a raw porkchop in your pocket, which is why I rarely post. I'm sure I will have responses from those that disagree. I don't agree with the laxity of welfare regulation, but I don't want to see anyone go hungry, or live under a bridge either, or have no health care. There are abuses, but you can find them in every walk of life, there is always someone wanting to squeeze the system for all it's worth. I would rather put up with some abuse than refuse someone a helping hand, the money spent on welfare is a drop in the bucket compared to what has been spent in iraq for nothing. There are many"haves" who think anyone who needs help can "get a job". Well some can't or if they can, maybe it's not one that will support them or their familys which you don't think they should be able to have either. Or the job comes with no insurance, or a hundred other reasons why they may need short or long term help. I don't know the answer, I wish somebody did. I do not beleive there is anyone on the political scene who does either. There are a number of posters on this forum who are class acts in the way they treat their fellow tht members, this is surely a carryover from their personal lives. The same is true of the bottom feeders. If you can't find it in your hearts to help your fellow man a little, then at least do us a favor and purchase spell checker.

Bug, i think you just hit the nail on the head. Not with all but i bet most of the recepients with nice things. Send the kids to the corner, sell the drugs, and then go pick up the check..But i doubt its grandmas groceries...And i doubt ANY elected official will ever do anything about the welfare system. That would be political suicide...
