Don't you want a scope? At 200 yards I really need the scope for accurate shooting........If you want a big boom get a .338win mag with a muzzle brake! But that's going to bust your budget and the ammo is horrendusly expensive. A nice M1 or the Ruger Mini-30 would be good on the range and come the revolution......
Why limit yourself to shooting stuff on your mountain, how about stuff on the the other mountains? Go ahead and run with the big dogs in the tall grass with a.....
Please don't shoot the messenger, but you guys do realize that linking to pictures on these manufacturers web sites is stealing their bandwidth, don't you?
No, I'm not. I do know how much it costs to host a site, however. I'm sure Barrett and Armalite would rather you not link directly to their images. It's not that difficult to copy them and post them.
I could be wrong. Send them an email and ask. I suspect you're not that interested, and far be it from me to suggest what you should and shouldn't do.
If you can't run with the Bigdogs, stay on the porch.......If you are a new shooter......you may find very quickly that you like the sport and suddenly you end up with a "habit" and a couple of high powered rifles.....scopes, shooting rests, spotting scopes, boxes of cleaning accessories and a separate foot locker full of ammo......That Barrett is very sweet but don't forget the Nightforce scope to go with it! Not really that practical at 30"+ Lbs but you never know when you will need to ruin someone's day at a 1,600 yards! Though at $7K I think we are busting your budget........back in the real world.....take a look at Browning ABolt II Stainless in a variety of calibers and a $400 Scope and you have a very accurate serviceable package for shooting, hunting, taking out liberals in the next civil war etc.

I kind of agree with this post. Flip side, if I was to have only ONE gun to recommend be it a Remington, Ruger, Browning, in that order, I'd suggest a .270 with a GOOD scope to anybody. Not to expensive, can get your bullets at any Wally World, won't beat you up when you pull the trigger and can be used for anything in the woods short of a grizzly. Just my worthless 2 cents.

If you are looking for an all around rifle cartridge centerfire plinker, one that is practicle for medium to large size American game, cheap to shoot at targets and less than $600, I would get a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in .308.

Hey, I'll save you some money here. Go get yourself a Remington .300 Win Mag(surprisingly affordable), no muzzle brake or mods done to it. Fire a box of ammo at over a buck a round and voila, your cured!!! You won't be able to feel your shoulder and with the hit to the wallet you'll never want to shoot ever again. Or you'll love it and get addicted on the spot. So, you ready to belly up to the bar and run with the big dogs???? Just remember, don't use a scope on it until your use to it.
Yeah, my .300wsm at 6.5lbs is by far my most punishing rifle.....much worse than the .338 (muzzle break) or the .375H&H (11lbs)but its a tackdriver...though the A Bolt trigger is a bit heavy out of the box..... The .270 or the .308 are much easier on the shoulder.
Well we went from a sub-200 dollar gun from a barrel to everyones favorite deer gun. Cool. I have absolutely NO need for another rifle, but the sales flyer from Sportsmans Warehouse has me drooling over a Weatherby Vanguard in whatever standard caliber is offered. The most dangerous thing about guns is usually what the habit ends up doing to your budget. That said, I have really enjoyed my Swedish Mauser, bought for 100.00 about ten years ago. This type of gun is fun to shoot, and leaves enough budgetary breathing room to allow future gun purchases. Have fun!
