Menzies: I think it is admirable that your son wants to learn a foreign language. I have no experience with Rosetta Stone, so can't comment on its effectiveness. But, as a Yale-trained linguist, I can say that different people learn languages differently. What may have worked for you may not work for your son. I have over a thousand hours of personal tutoring from Berlitz and it was so-so, others in my class were fluent on completion. But, the Berlitz correspondence course was fantastic for me, as it filled in all the blanks. Not plugging Berlitz, there are better programs out there, IMO, but that environment worked best for me. I would suggest you do a google search for "foreign language". There are as many learning programs as there are languages, and many are on-line and free, especially for Spanish, French, German, and Italian. Most of them offer introductry lessons, or tests to measure language learning ability under different conditions. Best regards.
Hey Menzies.....I would be real interested in what you decide to use and how it works. I have been thinking for some time I really need to get fluent in Spanish.
Since he has British born parents he is good to go on that - he can even use a fork and knife!!
He is in his fourth year of high school German and Frau had recommended the Rosetta Stone for conversational German. He wants to spend next summer in Germany before starting college, but he doesn't want to go without being able to converse.
You may want to check with your local library. Locally the Ocala Fl library has most of Rosetta Stones programs online for free for library card holders. Its worth checking to see if your library has similar. Good luck

Re the library idea. I did tell him about that and his concern was the amount of time he could have them for. Each of the three sections has about 200 hours of study. I told him that he could probably have them for 3 weeks or a month but call in and keep them longer so long as no one else had reserved them.
Don't know anything about Rosetta Stone except what I have read about it (never used it). It is supposedly one of the better ones out there. That said, nothing is better than language immersion, i.e. getting dropped into an environment of a foreign language. As far as that goes, I found it easier to teach the whole town English than to try and learn Japanese.
Fwiw, anyone that speaks English is going to pick up German real quick. I have never studied German but to my surprise I was able to understand a lot of the dialog of German movies. There is a lot of similarity between the two languages. I remember something about speculation that English is derived from German.
Humm. Peas off the back of a folk?!? Try eating peas with chopsticks.
I always thought English was derived from Latin. Just like Spanish, Italian, Portugese, French, and Greek.
No, they all talk backward; i.e. "ball red". English is "red ball"...noun-verb vs verb-noun.
I’m not sure where English comes from but I read that it may be Germanic in origin. I just wanna know what idiot gets credit for all of the “gh” sounds in English; ghost, plough, laugh …
German only has two rules; (1) Capitalize All Words Like This, And (2) If There Isn’t A Word That You Need, Just Cram A Bunch Of Words Together To Make One. Example, There Is No Word For ‘I Just Smashed My Big Toe’ So Ijustsmashedmybigtoe Would Be The Proper German Word For It.
I was not referring to checking it out from the library rather some library's (mine for instance) will allow you to take the Rosetta stone course for free via their web site. Its web based so time is not a problem.

Thank you for suggesting this. I have been contemplating purchasing Rosetta Stone software to learn Tagalog and I never would have thought to check the Library. Turns out my library offers the on-line courses also. You saved me some $$ and I very much appreciate it.
