This bill was sent to collections and has now shown up on my report. Is this legal? What do I do now?

I believe if you send a letter to the credit agencies stating that it is in dispute that they must include that in your report. This is what I have heard, I don't have first hand knowlege.

Hey, been there, done that.

My advice is to pay the bill, if you can, then straighten things out with whoever billed you. I found I had a collection note on my credit history when I was borrowing some money a while back. Hell, I never received a bill from one of these billing groups for a doctor who was one of several involved in my being hospitalized a few years ago. Turns out they sent it to the wrong address! I would have never known about this if not for looking at my credit report.

I contacted the collection agency first, then I checked with my insurance company. Turns out the insurance company had paid that bill THREE TIMES!!! It took a while, but now it's off my credit report, and guess what? I had to pay the credit bureau to get it done!

Dispute it if it's inaccurate. My wife has found at least 8 problems in hospital billing in the past 2 years, including one where we were billed twice for my son's circumcision.

this is joint insurance, I am self employed and it is paid by my company.

Go to the doctor/surgen/hospital and GET IT ON.

My wife is a medical coder [ ER ] and corrects the doctors everyday.

DON'T BACK DOWN.

I recently had a lawsuit against me because of an unpaid medical bill that was incorrectly filed with the WRONG insurance for almost a year and then was turned over to collections. It burns my a$$ to even think about the incompetent idiots(at least here at our local hospitals) that do the billing and coding and wonder how many people pay their bills without even knowing they are wrong. People with good insurance get taken to the cleaners but indigents who don't want to work are left off of the hook as charity cases.

Medical insurance is hell. If you don't have it and you're hurt/sick you're screwed and if you do they still screw you.
