Random Quote: Fishing is not a matter of life or death.......Its much more important than that!!!!
I have seen many welded and othe home made variations but am looking for an easy solution to attach a ball hitch to my Craftsman DYS 4500
It has the normal pin type lip for a trailer hook-up - I'll post a pic as soon as I can find a camera. I don't have a welder or anyother heavy metal fabricating equipment.
I have seen a thin version of just the flat part of the tongue hitch bar without the square receiver bar somewhere but can't find one.
What do you'll use - any ideas??? This is for light duty moving of small trailers around the yard.

Here you go This lip looks big in this pic but there is not enough area to drill a larger hole and put the ball in this hole. I need it to be back a few inches to turn anyway - thanks

Sunday just past we just bought a Craftsman riding mower Bob..........all I can say is I wish I could pay your prices!
Here's the unit we bought (Click Here) plus we got the 48" snow blower and the snow cap. I'm pretty sure I've got a deal on a slightly used Craftsman steal trailer. ?
Either way, what is it you don't like about the trailer hookup setup?
Mine is 42 in I htink and 22 hp and no footpedal controls but yea, it was less than 1500.
My question was how/where to attach a combo ball/pin hitch - I have seen somewhere where they have a flat bar tongue bolted to the existing pin hole and it had a pin and ball about 4 inches back
it looked like a stock or prefabed setup and I was hoping to find one so I didn't have to get anything custom made or welded.....

Looking at that pic Bob, I'd say you could get a couple of 1/4" steal plates and several spacers to sandwich the tongue you have there. The 1/4" steal plates would then be drilled and bolted to that tongue and the spacers are used where needed. These steal plates can be as large as you need them to be. Where your ball ends up going you will need to use a length of steal pipe to span the distance between your upper and lower steal plates....this way you can tighten your ball as much as you need to. I would have to figure any welding shop in which you buy your 1/4" steel plate should be able to guillotine cut you your pieces to pretty much any size you'd like. ?
That's it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Exactly what I was looking for!!!!!!!!! I always forgetabout ebay - the only stuff I ever seem to be able to get there is buy it now stuff...........

I towed a 19 ft. boat with my last craftsman tractor but you gotta make sure you don't have too much toung weight. And I don't think I would try it with the auto tranny - I can't rebuild that myself
I think I will get this as HOTSPOT suggests or the 4 " square bolt on to the rear plate version.
This is the 4" sq. - much firmer grasp to the mower - don't have to worry about the lip bending - problem is mi bolts are a 3" sq and I really didn't wanna drill into my tractor while it wa sunder warranty..I may do this one anyway..
They actually make a ball with a shank small enough to go through that hole. I've got the same mower. I think I got the ball at a hardware store. These balls are not made for on-road use due to the size of the shank. Look at hardware, tractor supply type stores.
You don't need the set back. I move trailers all the time with my mower and have never ran across one that would not fit.
Thanks for the info. Just ordered the same for my Crafstman lawn tractor I just bought. Will make it nice to move the empty trailers when cutting grass around them.
I've had a ball in the hole before, but the problem is it was too low. My tongue jack would not lower far enough to reach the ball and it is too heavy to lift easily. (tandem)
I think I will get this as HOTSPOT suggests or the 4 " square bolt on to the rear plate version.
That's pretty cool how Steve came up with that stuff...even I feel compelled to thank Steve, even though I'm not in the market at this time. Steve ....good show man!

OK I know I am slow..and usually the last one to get it...and a little disassociated but....
And, I know Garett and Hotspot, BUT who is Steve?????? Is my computer missing a response?

Got the hitch from Ebay mentioned above, the one with 4 bolts and a backing plate. Got it in 3 days with a thanks from the seller. Nice product that works great. An ordinary 2" draw bar will fit, so you don't have to get the one with the small bar included.
Tractor moves my tandem trailer fine with it. Height is perfect.
