Sunday morning, 5:30am, two cashiers with no one checking out. Cashiers are 35 feet from the door. I check out with four bags of ice and stuff to make a sandwich or two. The door greeter watches me check out and when I get to the door she want to check my receipt. I ask why and she say she has to check because I have things that are not bagged. (ice?) I don't like WalMart anyway so this really pokes me. I tell her to get the manager, get madder while I wait so I just ask for my money back. Can't do that without a manager. Finally get someone, tell her the problem she tells me I have to show receipt. I just ask for a refund. Manager make a big show of checking off each item from the receipt and pretty much behaves in a manner that I would expect from WalMart. By this time it is after 6:00 so I go down the street to Lowes Foods. (phone call to rest of crew shows that I am still ahead of them) I did indeed pay about a buck more but I was treated well in a very nice store. Am I missing something here? Is it understandable why I should have to be checked at the door. I have seen people checked but this was the first time I have ever been asked to allow inspection. WalMart is the only retailer I have ever seen do this. Not Target, or even Sears/Kmart.
you do not have to show them the receipt, you would have been within your rights to just walk out the door. when you pay for something, it is yours. you do not have to show proof of ownership. they can not detain you by law. they can ask for the receipt, but again, its up to you whether or not you want to show it to them.
I know when I visit Sams they do the same thing, it is a PITA since like most folks I put the reciept in my billfold after paying and have to pull it out for the little lady to look at my order and scratch it with her marker
One of the reasons I avoid Sams/Walmart unless I really have to go there for something.

Places like Sam's and Costco are a membership stores and they have the right to do this. This is one of my pet peeves and I hate it to no end. Many stores do this and often it is contingent on the neighborhood. It that bias or what.
I usually refuse and tell the door guard if they want to see my receipt they can walk with me out to my car, I'll be glad to show it to them as we walk thru the parking lot. I'm not going to be held up or inconviencenced for them.
BTW, my wife hates when I do this and she will just show them the receipt.
i can understand them stopping you when you walk into a store with items in hand. this way they can tag the item showing its yours. many retailers have a problem with people grabbing an item off the shelf, then walking to customer service and trying to return it using an old receipt with the same item listed on it.
but if they try to detain you after you purchase something, they are violating your rights
What is stupid is that they don't even check the stuff - they just look at the reciept, look at the cart (or single bag), look at you (sometimes) and scratch the reciept. It is not doing anything but slowing down the world.

Good grief folks, do you have any idea at all how much retailers lose through shoplifting each year?
There is absolutely NOTHING to keep a customer from going through a check-out line then returning to the shopping isles when no one is watching to pick up a few more things. Either that or they can do some creative "exchanging" for items they just paid for.
Sure, you can be well within your "rights" to refuse to let them check your receipt against what you're carrying out and make them do whatever it takes to make you happy. I'm sure that will take much more time than just acknowleging they don't just do this kind of thing for fun or simply to inconvenience their customers.

RI Builder, you are confusing my unhappiness with WalMart with anger at the people. The greeter was embarrassed and apologetic. I was firm but polite. The manager type was the only rude person. The cashiers seemed to be embarrassed as well. As for shopping there, WalMart is nowhere near my first choice for shopping of any kind. It was convenient at 5:30 in the morning to get some extra bags of ice. I actually spent a considerable amount more at the Lowes store because I bought several more "extra" items. In WalMart, all I wanted to do was get in and out of there.
Surgergirl, I have never been asked before this. But I am sure you could just intimidate the checker with your attack PFFFFFT!! I know it would work on me!
Duct Tape, thanks for the link. I considered doing that but I just did not want to prolong the confrontation and I thought that I would really put the greeter person in a bad spot. She was apologetic but said she "was just doing what she was told to do". She seemed sincere so I wanted to get beyond her to the management. With the attitude that I got from the manager-type, I was glad I did. This way the greeter and the cashiers won't have to listen to any "what you should have done" lecture from a WalMart low level manager type. I can only assume that it is the low self-esteem of the average WalMart customer that allows WalMart to get away with this.
Duct Tape is absolutely right. It has already been tried and tested in South Florida. The legal opinion was just as he said. Once you pay for an item, it belongs to you. Store representatives can only use reasonable means to detain shoplifters. With no evidence of shoplifting, they are merely fishing for evidence. You may walk right out the door. If they attempt to detain you or put their hands on you, you may have then just won the lottery.
My local Home Depot does this all the time. Any other HD I have gone to does not. I always wondered if it was legal. It can be annoying to wait on one line and then another - then again their service is the pits anyway.

On any give day you can walk in there and see how terribly tainted the gene pool in this country has become.
The local WallyWorld' has a large portion of their Garden
Supplies outside, past the cash registers. There's always
someone there checking reciepts vs. items. I have no
problem with this considering the logistics. The one time
I was asked for my receipt by the front door, I just smiled
and said "No Thanks"and kept walking. The lady had to be 90
years old, what was she gonna do, chase me?

Freebird - I think we are all aware of the amount lost due to shoplifting, however it is minucule in comparison to internal theft and therein lies the solution.
If retailers have better control systems to manage/oversee the outflow of merchandise, the need to check everyday consumers would go away - people slipping though with unpaid merchandise would be minimized and this would become a non-issue. Those processes would then also minimize internal theft as well.
It is a 99% retailer problem, not a consumer one.

Are you referring to Wal-Mart's employees or their customers? Where do you shop Pug? Does Wal-Mart, Sam's, or Costco not carry the "right" wings for you?
