Phone service is with Alltel, will I be able to use my phone in Bermuda?
Alltel has given me two stories, one positive and one negative, I need to either confirm I will have service or go to plan B. Plan B is to purchase a prepaid phone once I get there.
Please help.

If you have an unlocked GSM phone the best thing would be to pick up a pay as you go SIM card when you arrive. They are like $30 and you can top it up almost anywhere on the island.

US phones work, but it's expensive. Verizon hit me pretty hard after I was there for about a month.

Basic answer as jay said: no. Unless you pay for the sim card.

Verizon has maybe the best coverage in the US, but take a Verizon phone out of the US and it no workie. If you have Verizon you have to call um a week in advance and they will ship you a phone that will work. But as Gateway says - expensive.

Only service that I know of that will work when you get there is Cingular - assuning you have the $6/month international option.

Alltel says they have a contract to use Verizon's towers on the island and that my current phone will work. I guess I will find out when I get there.

Verizon does not have a tower in Bermuda.
Southhampton Princess is a great hotel.

Cingular will unlock your phone for you once your contract is up...then you can use the pre-paid cards available outside the USA. For international coverage, a quad-band GSM phone will work virtually everywhere.

You can buy an unlocked phone off E-Bay (search unlocked GSM).

South P is great, it's the biggest hotel on the island full service..everything from private beach and golf course to it's own dock. Trust me get an unlocked gsm phone and pick up a sim here.
Sorry First Light, i thought you were someone else. It wasn't pretty two battlewagons had a run in with a smallish rock....the rock won.
