Just got two more new Dell machines.........and I am regretting this already. This program does not work....this has to be upgraded..........I thought I did my homework before I got these........guess I did notdo good enough.
It seems every time you do something in Vistayou get a warning for this or that. Also hadto get Office 2007 since Office 2003 is not compatible. But.....2007 will work with older Windows versions. That figures.
Sorry......just venting. Please tell me I am not alone! I am to old to re-learn stuff.

RE: Windows Vista.......does anyone actually like it?
"You are a child of the universe, no less than the seas and the stars, you have a right to be here....." and you are absolutely correct about Vista. POS in my opinion. Had to be beta sited by some geek without a life. Have you figured out how to keep the blasted thing from shrinking the active window when you try to scroll down or up (or enlarge it if it's already minimized)

Ray .....If I knew it would be this much of a learning curve, I would have considered it. But........I know for a fact thatfour of the programs I use the most (Yamaha parts software, VP parts, Merc Partsand our Point of sale program) will not work with Apple.

Re: Windows Vista.......does anyone actually like it?
Yeah, I would have changed to Apple long time ago but have too many progies that won't work in it, then on the other hand, they won't work in Vista either. I'm sticking with XP prof.
RE: Windows Vista.......does anyone actually like it?
Andy,
That's why I built my machine and installed XP Pro. I've also built machines for friend for work with Windows 2000 Pro. I hadn't read a good thing about Vista and didn't want to be their guinea pig. I have friends that are screaming because all you can get is Vista POS. Good luck with it.
Re: Windows Vista.......does anyone actually like it?
dell will load xp if you insist as they are aware its a bloated pos, reguires 1gb ram to even operate, it was not ready for public release, insist on xp.
or have a tech build you what you need, it will be far better anyway.

Re: Windows Vista.......does anyone actually like it?
MS is committed to support Win XP until something like 2014 or 2015, something like that. Anyway, it’s still a long time out, long enough for them to get Vista fixed.
Heard on the news a couple weeks ago that Dell, the largest computer manf now, has quietly gone back to Win XP on two of its models of business machines. When I called IBM support about upgrading to Vista on my ThinkPad they told me not to be so stupid…ok, they really said "don’t do it, sit tight" with the XP that came on the machine.
I suspect Win XP will become like Win 98, no one wanted to move off of it. It was holding MS back. I went from Win 98 to Win XP a little over a year ago. Vista ain't gonna happen anytime soon for me, not until there is shareware avilable to shut down Vista's reporting/spying "features" and to close the backdoors.
Re: Windows Vista.......does anyone actually like it?
Unless I really have my wires crossed you can run XP on Apple computers, so...... all your programs will run on an Apple computer, so why not give it a chance?
Again, go to an apple store and let them show you how. Best move you will ever make.

lol..unless you actually want to use it in a business setting.
SIM-
You can make Vista act and look just like Windows XP if you're more comfortable with XP. Right click over start, properties, and click on "classic desktop."M$ changed alot of stuff around just for change sake in this one. Atcually once you get used to it, it's not as bad as it first seems. But wait till you use Office 2007..ugh!! Completely different Office 2003 and Office XP..for no real reason.

Oh you can..but why would you want to? In order to do what you say you'd have to dual boot(if you could even use a boot manager or something like that), or use some virtual PC type software, and then what are you gaining?
Why spend so much more $$ on older, slower hardware only to have it work in a small square on the screen using 640x480 resolution. Ahh..it's that apple proprietary hardware, that's why you can only run a generic Windows video card driver on it! And you can'r load OS X on anything else but...Apple hardware!
If you want Linux with a pretty front end, get Ubuntu or Redhat and put KDE or Gnome on it for free.
Re: Windows Vista.......does anyone actually like it?
Well the most folks would say the easier and cheaper version of fixing his problem would be to take what he has now and make it look and act like what he is used to, rather than throwing money at an entirely different computer, O/S and software to learn (which is what he was trying to avoid to begin with).
But that doesn't do much for the stock price though.
RE: Windows Vista.......does anyone actually like it?
Parallel is the new virtual machine that enable you to run mulitple platforms under a Mac.
I'm an it guy and work with Windows all the time and my business counts on it. But at home I love my Mac. It's stable and fun to work with and less prone to viruses. I also do a lot of photo and video editing and nothing beats the mac.
The only reason I would use Parallel is when I need to run an apps that required Windows OS. You could run Parallel in coherence mode which makes the Windows menu run next to the Mac OSX tray.
