Besides the noise factor, look at the load capability. Kitchen Aid is my recommendation. The european models usually have a smaller load capacity, not good for a family. PS. The stainless steel ones are always full of fingerprints and smuges.

I think Whirlpool makes Kenmore for Sears, and I would recommend the higher end ones first and foremost; check their db levels with a salesman.

I have had the top end Miele and Bosch, and they have broken more than any appliance in all of my houses I have lived in. The "warranties" are a joke, as when they came out, there was always a reason why it was not the manufacturers fault .

Kitchen Aid and Maytag are the same company- between the two names I have five appliances- all suck big time. I have had more service calls on these, the dishwasher leading in number, in the last several years than I can count. Leaks (ruined a Pergo floor), rust, parts falling apart you name it. Service it typically poor as well- my wife is on a first name basis with most of the repair guys.

I will never buy another Maytag or Kitchen Aid.

We've had a SS Bosch DW for about 10-11 years...hard to hear it run and it out cleans any other DW we've ever had and it's never needed service. 1 word of caution, however, don't use any citrus/lemon based DW detergent in a SS unit...

So far I am leaning towards these, but I haven't ruled anything out... The Kenmore is 56db which looks high compared to 46db.. Bosch is 50db I wonder how loud the old Maytag I'm replacing is...

Another vote for Bosch.

When we remodeled our kitchen last year, went to the local family owned appliance store. His strong recommendation was Bosch. He'd sell me another, even more expensive brand if i wanted, but recommended the Bosch hands down.

I think we paid around $700 for ours stainless w/stainless tub. I think it was the SHE44XX series.

FYI-
Sears every once in a while as a 20% cash back on appliances purchased over $400. Keep an eye out for them. Well worth either the wait, or purchase and hold them.

Our new house has GE Profile appliances in the kitchen. Most of them are brand new--I had to remove some packing material from the range before I could use it. The seller had told us that he didn't replace the dishwasher when they remodeled because it works fine, and he was right. It's quiet and gets the dishes clean.

I second the comment above about stainless appliances looking smudgy.

I only offer opinions around here when I know what I am talking about. I have a "side business" remodelling kitchens and baths and have installed many brands. I can tell you that the better designers and stores we work with go to the factory tours and seminars a couple times a year and EVERY ONE says MIELLE is the best dishwasher - Hands down - quietest, best "cleaner", low energy consumption - everything. You can find one for 1200 - or somewhere in that range - and you wont regret it.

That being said - Bosch is a great product as well. Kitchen Aid makes some good - and some crap - and I stay away from SEARS. For appliance purchases - I like the small ma and pa shops - their reps know what they are talking about and they will usually match or beat the large chain prices.

Just my experience - REMEMBER - ALL OF THESE SALESPEOPLE GET HUGE KICKBACKS - even if they are not commissioned employees. The manufacturers insentivise them by offering kickbacks on monthly sales of their product. So if someone is pushing a specific brand very hard - they might be working toward a monthly kickback number - THIS HAPPENS A LOT - My father manages an appliance store and he said the manufacturers compete on a monthly basis for the bast sales promo's. This way the salesperson can say "we are not commissioned at all" - when in fact they are on the back end.

VERY SURPRISING - I have had 2 dealings with Mielle and warranty repair - both were fast and smooth. They have an intensive cert process to be allowed to install and do warranty work and they are the type of company that fixes it even if they think it isnt their fault. I would put their service above anyone else we deal with - maybe it is just in my area - could be a problem with different regional service contracts -

Another vote for Bosch. I believe the LG unit is the same with a different name and I also believe they are now made state-side. The Kenmore Elite mentioned earlier sounds like it might be as well. Whirlpool doesn't make all of the Kenmore appliances because I've seen GE fridges with the Kenmore badges. We paid $500 for ours 3-4 years ago. It was incredibly easy to install, does a great job with dishes and is amazingly quiet. Ours is in a "peninsula" in the kitchen that is next to the breakfast table. The only time we really hear it running is when it is filling, Our new refrigerator makes more noise than the dishwasher. It holds as many dishes as the Kenmore we replaced. And the best "guy feature" is that it won't melt the tupperware that gets put on the bottom rack even though it heats the water to 160 degrees! The one drawback is that if you wash a load with a lot of plastic in it, not everything gets completely dry.

$1,200 for a dish washer? I'd use paper plates and put that money towards the Harley add-ons. Just a thought.

The only brand still made in the US is maytag (UWA) I have a Maytag fridge but I am going to be replacing it with an LG as its 25 years old it will be retired to the garage for the beer their product and design is leading the industry all others are made in Mexico LG is made in Korea I'd rather give my money to korea than mexico if i had a choice

Mexican here. Can't beat her. 22 years old and hot as a two dollar pistol. Guaranteed not to wear out for at least 10 to 15 more years.

When you use SS cleaner you don't get the smudges or paw prints as bad. Yes it needs to be reapplied.

It's still 80% better than black. I have gloss black down here and never ever again.
