Can't go wrong with a Canon. My wife is a photographer and uses them exclusively for digital. I have been through several small digital point and shoots. From the ones I've used, both Sony and Canon, the tiny Sony Cybershot lasted the longest but didn't have zoom. I put them through some severe abuse in harsh conditions though. Canon has a nice waterproof, rubberized digital that I'm considering for my "boat" camera. It should be suitable. Just avoid too big of a screen on the back. It sucks down the battery on any camera very quickly and isn't very durable. Here's a link to a good online store for cameras. These are the waterproof versions. I'm looking at the lower end models with at least 5 megapixels and waterproof to 5 or 10 feet in case I'm out snorkeling...

Santa brought me a Sony Cyber-shot, model DSC-S500. I am learning to use at boat and car shows. I am not very high tech so it user friendly and has been fun to e-mail pictures same day. The quality of the pictures I print are good.. Next step is to learn how to post on this site..

Good Luck and have Fun..

Check out www.epinions.com Great website for all that stuff, read reviews, etc. I have the Canon A620. Love it. Very easy to use. I bought it over a year ago, so I am sure there is other stuff out there now that is cheaper, better, easier to use blah blah blah.

Canon. Check out http://imaging-resource.com/ for seriously in-depth reviews. Very factual.

Vin,

I bought a Sony DSC-H5 recently - well, 8 months ago now - and I love it. It's a 7.2 MP, 12x optical zoom (which is awesome) and one of my favorite things is the 3 INCH display screen. There's the H2 which is similar, but has a significantly smaller, more commonly found 2 inch screen and 6 MP.

Fairs pretty well on the reviews too. Here's a link..

I have been thru a whole bunch of cameras over the years. Right now, I have three Sonys, a Canon, and a Sea & Sea. For underwater I have been using a Sony with their marine housing. I am shopping for two more cameras, one will probably be top-of-the-line Canon and another underwater camera.

10 ft. depth isnt good enough for me, although I like the little pocket sized Olympus. Their lens is too small for a lot of the stuff I do. I just seem to have the best luck with the Sonys overall. I use a DSC V3 with a remote control to take aerial photos from a helium balloon, its a great little camera.

Some things I have learned:

I have found that paying a lot for optical zoom is pretty much a waste of time underwater. You wont get good shots much further away than 10-20 ft. Even here, where visibility is commonly 100 ft. or better. A good macro capability can be magic, though.

Digital zoom, in my opinion, total absolute waste of time. Pure marketing gimmick, because its another electronic bell and whistle. Its useless if you want good photos. I always turn it off in the menus.

More megapixels is not always better. less mp but better optics is sometimes a better quality photo. The Sony's use Zeiss optics, which are pretty good in small cameras.
