Default checking an AC Adapter

Good evevning all. My wife and kids are leaving for florida on tuesday. (I'm staying home ) ..
My daughter wants to take her portable DVD player with her. She never uses it so I decided to charge the battery . Plug everything in and zilch...no power light. How do I check if the transformer thing is working . ?
Can I grab another one from something in the house or are the out put levels different for each specific application ? I asked her when she noticed it wasn't working ..She's 6 yrs old and said "I don't know"...
Damn kids these days have so many electronic toys its hard to keep up..

The output, low voltage plug polarity and maximum current are usually molded into the adapter case. THEY ARE NOT ALL THE SAME!!

You can test the voltage output with a VOM

If it works off of AC just buy a cheap inverter, probably less trouble.
