Just an FYI but you can get an 06 Tundra for less than a Tacoma. I have an 00 Tacoma that I've had since new...great truck and will probably keep another 7 years unless I have something bigger I need to tow.
There is a long term test in one of the current auto mags. It may be truck trends. Good advice about the current Tundras. The big Tacos with V6s get about the same mileage as the Tundra V8.
I own a 2006 taco TRD short bed. I absolutely love the truck. The aggressive bolstering on the front seats took a little time to get used to. I am in Sales and drive 45k-50k/yr and I wouldn't own another brand. The only thing that I do not like on the truck is it has rear drums which tend to get a little grabby after a stop. Milage for the truck is good at 22 highway if kept around 70mph. Oil changes take 5 minutes because filter is inverted up top of the engine. Over the past 6 years I have owned 5 toyotas and have had minimal issues and great resales. Good luck with whatever truck you choose.
Well I did it traded in my 03 ram 1500 quad cab
and got the 07 tacoma quad cab 6ft bed
with the sr5 package
absolutely love the truck.
Went for a 100 mile drive yesterday and it road smoooooooth.
I have a 02 Tundra V8 and love it. Picked it up used last year with 30,000 miles. The gas does seem to evaporate at a fast pace. But the pulling power is well worth the cost of fuel.

The "HOOK & LADDER"
I had a 2006 tacoma extended cab with 4 cylinders. The ride was great. The 4 cylinder is crude and a mistake; I had no problem with the weak power, and I don't tow, but it would race at idle when it was cold. I really had to wait 3 minutes for the car to warm up on cold mornings before I could drive it. I liked the looks of the truck though, and for the light duty use I needed it for (hauling crap to the beach and kids games) it was fine.
