I love my D70. If the price is right you cant really go wrong IMHO.
A little bulky for carrying around but most digital SLR's are big compared to the non SLR's.

Here's another thumbs up for the D-70. Mine has been great. Super fast recovery time. You can set it to shoot 3 shots per second for up to 144 shots. We were trying to take family pics with a 2 year old that didn't want to sit still. ripped off 40 some odd shots in about 10 seconds. Only one was good, but that was one more than anyone else got. If you use a Nikon film camera, all your lenses will work on it too. I know they have a D-50 and a D-80 out that are newer, but I'm not sure how they differ.
Just bought a D50 and love it. Ya can't go wrong with the D70. Like mymojo said, check the prices. Make sure you are comparing cameras with the sames lens(s).

I'm a Canon guy. I love my 20D and am thinking about upgrading to the 30D.
Be sure to check out the life of the shutter mechanism. My 20D life is something like 20,000 exposures, but the new 30D is 100,000! BIG Improvement! That just the first thing I thought of.
But seriously, both Canon and Nikon are awesome. Do your research, and I'm sure you'll be happy. My bud has a D70 and loves it.
I'm a 20D guy too, but the D70 is very nice. If I was buying new I'd be quite tempted by Pentax's new SLR. It has in-body image stabilization and it's weather sealed--two things you can't say about the 20D/D70. Pretty cheap too.
Nikon and Canon both make great D-SLR's but I'll take the path walked less often.... I chose an SLR from a different company and it wasn't Pentax or Oly or Sony either
Just waiting for the new body to be released in the US because I sold off my old body in anticipation of the new one...

May or may not have been a good decision. Right now there isn’t much of anything on the DSLR market (and isn’t expected to be for some time) that can compete with the new Nikon D2Xs and its sensor. That CMOS CCD is actually made by Sony but it took Nikon 2+ years of engineering to integrate it into the newest version of their D2X camera. The quality and integrity of a 12.4mp image from that sensor will blow away a 16.7mp image from a Canon EOS 1D. The Nikon actually produces a sharper image with 1/4 less pixels!!! Gotta have you wondering why a sensor with significantly less pixels is producing a better, sharper image… (hint: it has nothig to do with the lens).
If you want the best possible image from a DSLR but have already invested in Canon optics, don’t worry. It’s just a matter of time before Canon surpasses the Nikon D2Xs, and you’ll be right back on top again. I’m waiting for a comparison between the anticipated 20mp Canon image and the Nikon 12.4mp image.
A camera is only the 1/2 of it. The lens is the other half. Since Kyocera got out of the camera business and retired the Contax line of cameras, Zeiss/Covina is not under any contractual restrictions to limit production of 35mm camera lens to just the Contax and Leica cameras. So now the best camera lens optics in the world, the Zeiss lenses, are now being produced in mounts for Nikon and Canon cameras.
On the down side, now that Sony has acquired the Minolta technology from Kyocera and is producing it in a line of Sony branded cameras, Sony is posturing to compete with Nikon by using that same sensor in a Sony branded DSLR. If that happens there is some speculation that Nikon may abandon sensor sourcing from Sony, and thus close the door on the phenomenal D2Xs…and replace it with what?!?
I’m thinking the next major step in digital SLR photography is going to come from the lens, not the cameras. The camera resolution is already at a point that an image from a DSLR on a 35mm frame competes with that of an image from a medium format film camera. To that end Canon is already there and expanding the next generation of technology for lenes, Nikon is just now starting to play catch-up.
Anyways, that's my mindless ramblings. So, what DSLR did you get???
It is my honest opinion that Bayer sensors are only Mediocre anyway.. Does that answer what D-SLR I have? Read: The only one *without* a Bayer Mosiac sensor. I am just waiting on the official US Release of the SD14 so I can place my order.
I went into the D-SLR world with no vested interest in equipment, no closet full of glass and I chose to go with Sigma and "price" certainly wasn't part of my decision. As it stood I had over eight thousand tied up in my SD10 setup and chock up about another $2K or so to get me into the SD14 with the new PG21 grip, extera LiIon batteries and the new remote. But it's no big deal since I just sold my SD10 and was able to recoup $1100.00 for a used camera body and the new owner is tickled pink.
As far as glass goes right now I have the 100/300 HSM F4.0 Constant, 50mm F2.8 Constant Macro and 24-70mm F2.8 Constant (all EX Glass) and they have treated me very well. I usually have the 100/300 on the camera with or without the 1.45x EX Teleconverter. I would like even more reach but the 300-800mm EX HSM is in the $8K range so I'll pass on spending that much on one piece of glass, but the images I have seen taken with it, fantastic!
Not all pixels are created equally... And "Megapixels" unfortunatly, became a selling gimmick long ago...
Stinger - Nice shots on the Sigma web site. The series of shots are all ver soothing colorwise. I want to say muted but thats not the right word. The depth of field on the covered bridge shot is fantastic!
great work!
To eyeball and stinger - I just picked up a small pocket digital camera to carry when the Nikon is too cumbersome made by Panasonic if you can believe it. Seems to be a very well made and designed camera. It also has a Leica lens which has turned out some really amazing shots for a $300 price tag. Never thought I'd see a cheapish Leica lens but am very happy with it.

Fantastic shot! Love the composition and the slight fog makes it! I can just see myself waking up on the boat for a day of fun on the water!
Thanks for the compliments I appreciate them but none of my photowork is worth much, I get lucky on occasion and that's about it!
I can beleive the Panny takes nice shots, in fact I beleive any camera can and will, the guy or gal behind the glass is the most important part. And we can only start pixel peeping when we are talking about very large prints, on borderless 8x12's or even 16 inch prints most of the cameras we can purchase right now even affordably, make fantastic prints.
Can't comment on the Nikon, as I don't have have any experience with one, but the best digital photographic equipment forum and reviews site that I have ever found is this one: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ Poke around a bit, and you might uncover some helpful info.
