Default Treo.. Done with it for a phone. Goin back to a phone.

You'd think they'd make these darn things with all the same phone features as a good cell phone. Today trying to pull up a number using the little buttons almost got me in a wreck for the umpteenth time. No 'Name Dial' function for the blue tooth... I called Verizon and now am only going to utilize the data functions on it. No big deal really, so I will continue to bring it with me on the boat when playin hookey and in the truck when on the road. BUT I will have a regular cellphone (LG 8300) to carry in my pocket for a phone. 95% of the time I have it on me, I don't need the data functions, just the phone. Maybe one day they'll make them more suitable for me. I've had my Treo 700W since March, more accurately I should say Treo's (4) since March. They're delicate, can't withstand any shock. Can't carry in my pocket with anything else like, a pocket knife or lighter, or even change (the screen damages easily).. They're fine if you keep them in a case, I do have a mount in the truck, and a case mounted on the boat which would probably work fine on your belt if that's what you're used to, I am not.
Just needed to vent and put up a warning if you're thinking of one.

Afish,

I feel your pain

I got one of those Smart Phones from Kyrocea a couple of years ago. Does everything(internet, email,PDA functions)but the cell part of it sucked. Phone was to big hick to be practical, keypad was made for someone with midget hands and the battery life stunk. Pissed away $400 on that one.

Replaced it with a Motorola Razor.Fits in my pants pocket and works great. Best phone I have ever had. The only thing when its in your pants, is that you inadvertanly(sp)change the ring type sometimes and when it goes to vibrate mode and I am in a working in a boat, I start jumping around like I got mexican jumping bean in my shortsfor a few seconds

Love my Treo 700p and my bluetooth. Only problem is if I don't have the bluetooth I absolutely hate the Treo solo as a phone.

What I hate about cell phones is that as the phones get smaller my fingers stay the same size. When I'm drinking it's like dialing a phone with a bat. Ok this leads up to a joke.

Why do gorillas have big nostrils?????

fish,

While I am not much of a conspiracy theorist, I am convinced that the PDA, Cell phone, Blackberry, etc., to end all PDA's will never be built. It could easily be done, but then there would be no more "hey, look suckers, you gotta have this new one, it does more shiite than the one you have now". Same reason there is not, and will never be, an agreed upon platform/protocol for exchange, etc. (CDMA vs GSM, etc).

I want a mobile device that truly does "it all", and will interface and interchange anywhere on the planet where infrastructure exists.

I don't want wires. Any wires. Period. Why the flock are we still dealing with wires? (In my rage I have migrated to PC's now).

Why is optical storage not progressing at the same rate as silicon chip?? I want a da(m)n USB thumb drive that is half the size of a stick of gum and will hold a terrabyte of infromation, including a bootable copy of my OS and an image of my hard drive.

Why are laptop and notebook batteries so weak? I want a battery that lasts for an entire trans-Atlantic flight.

Why can't I have a keyboard that makes zero sound? More importantly, why can't you have one when you are sitting next to me on the trans-Atlantic flight, and for some reason YOUR fuggin' battery holds a charge for the entire flight?

Why can't I buy a new vehicle that is equipped with a hands-free phone that will SHARE my existing wireless number and service plan?

Why, oh why, oh frickity why, can't anyone who uses their cell phone in a movie theater be summarily executed on the spot?

I know, pipe dreams, all.

Whiney, hissy fitted, childish rant complete.

I'm with you on that one, be very happy to own 6 cell phones with the same number...

Al, I guess you're not old enuf yet. I'm still pizzed it took them until I was 30 years old to invent the cordless screwgun. Coulda really used one of them when I was younger!

Along the same vein, at least the stuff gets cheaper. My first really nice car that I bought cash, brand new, was a '85 BMW 528, took it and immediately had a phone put in it, $2500. I was all proud of myself about it.. Funny thing was my new cellular phone bill blew by any car payment I ever had (about $600mo avg)

Check out the Motorola Q. I am very happy with it. More of a cell phone than a PDA but has great PDA functions. Very easy to use.

Your first mistake was going with the TREO W instead of the TREO P with Palm OS. The P is more stable and had many more 3rd party applications written for it than W.

I have had my 650p for well over a year and it goes with me every trip on the boat, it's been dropped many times and it still works as advertised. I have a bluetooth ear piece which I'm not too fond of but it works when I'm driving and my other car has built in bluetooth and it works incredibly well.

I have the data plan with Verizon and could not go without access to email or the web and find they are invaluable but a little slow and definitely on the expensive side but it's for business.

I have heard great things about the Mot Q and came close to buying one recently but was advised by some of my techno friends that the next generation of smart phones will be out in the next 12-18 months and will be able to take advantage of the IMS architecture the wire line and wireless carriers as well as cable MSO's are adopting and these devices will put to shame anything on the market. So I'll wait a while longer and will continue to use my battered and bruised Treo.

First thing I did was put the screen protector on it

I am keeping the Treo, will keep the data plan with it. Just having the phone portion turned off. So now it can live in the truck, and I'll take it with on the boat for e-mail purposes. The extra cost to me is just the cost of the phone itself, same monthly charges as before, so I'm not giving up anything.

As for making a 'mistake' Yours uses a Palm OS which is limited compared to the windows platform... I keep an inventory of 50,000 tons of steel in it on Excel.. I use FilemakerPro for my other database stuff. When I shopped, the Windows platform was the selling point. So I don't think I made a mistake, Palm did when they chose the phone software. I want to be able to push a button on the bluetooth and say 'Name Dial' to make a call while the phone stays in my pocket... Can yours do that??

I see your point. Does not sound like the TREO is the right smart phone for you. The only way I can get mine to do the name dial thing is when I'm in my vehicle which has bluetooth.

You may want to go on Youtube and do a search on the Moto Q (as mentioned above) to see a video of the features. IIRC it has name dialing and it runs on Windows so you'll get to use your excel and filemaker.

Just wait for the next gen phones to come out which will work on the mobile network, wifi networks and wimax when it's deployed.

actually, Treo 700wx (sprints version of windows mobile 5) is way more stable than the verizon version (700W). I think that with the 700WX you can do the mame dial (not sure, i've only had it a couple of days - testing it for my company). I have replaced my 650P with this one, and I like it way better than the 650P because of the multitasking capabilities.
