Default Methanphetamine epidemic

Lost 6 good men in the last year to "meth". Forman caught with bag of meth in my company truck. 5 others failed urinalysis, first and second time, and still say I've never done "meth". Here in ATL they are calling it an epidemic. I cannot figure out for the life of me why a man would put something like that in their bodies and let it ruin them and their futures, family, and freedom. Crazy. Forman made 75K a year plus perks. He is now doing 4 years. Truck was impounded. All tools were missing plus the whole truck was disassembled or should say demolished. The "shit" is costing me tons of money and I've never touched a drug. I have been told that 98% of people who do it, will do it forever. Just one more reason for me to look to the very near future when I'm done and the only drug I have to worry about will be the ones I hear about on the news. Coming soon 2007 Island Runner 35 "who cares". Weez in da keys!

It has been an epidemic on the west coast for many years. Frontline on PBS did an excellent show on Meth.

I agree that once a user, always a user with this drug and it takes everyone down with it. Sorry to hear you are indirecty caught up in crossfire of what this drug can do to people.

Don't try to save the dope heads , give them all the dope they want [ yes I said give them ] so they can die quicker and the young people can watch them die , what a deterrent that would be.
I mean really why let them take 8 or 10 years to slowly kill them self's and be stealing my stuff the whole time to pay for their habit, It would just be easer to give 'em all they want and get it over with in a few weeks and all my sh!t stays in the house.

My best and life long friend works with the DEA here in north FL. You would not believe some of the things that he has seen> Park a tractor trailer in the Walmart parking lot and give it away by the bucket full. Then just watch for the buzards!! Sorry if I offend anyone but I'm done with the dope heads. makeing wonder if my truck is locked, everything going to be in my boat when I walk up to it.

Man that's got to be a drag...........can't you screen your employees for drug use prior to hiring them? Can you not do ramdom drug tests on your employees?

Construction and service related companies must be careful with drug testing...perform tests too often, and you'll have no employees...90% will fail. Pot, coke, speed, alcohol, glue, spray paint, you name it. Uncomfortable trend, not confined to big nasty urban areas like Miami.

When I lived in Arkansas and a house in some town would blow up the police would automatically assume there was a meth lab inside, but upon closer inspection it would turn out to be a gas leak.

A meth user is easy to spot. They're highstrung, pupils are dilated all day, they have little sores all over their bodies, and are continually scratching those sores. We knew people up there with psoriasis (sp) and we picked on them about being a meth-head.

What is meth? Are they pills? do you smoke it? snort it sniff it? I have heard about it but I really do not run in those circles but it would be nice to recognize the symptoms and what the stuff looks like in case some employees are involved with it.

Meth labs pop up and they are dangerous. They basically cook it up using sudafed and other crap and then I think they smoke it like crack if memory (from the PBS show) serves me right.

Meth labs have been a problem all over the midwest since it became the drug of choice. Its a major underground industry in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri. Most of what they need is readily available, and remote areas make it easy to operate without intervention from the law.
I'm with welder and slowtroll. Give em all they want. Leave em lay for a day or two as an example, and throw what remains in a hole.

You guys in construction that have to deal with this have my sympathy.

cut n paste -

=================

Here are some things to look for in identifying a meth lab:

Unusual, strong odors (like cat urine, ether, ammonia, acetone or other chemicals).

Residences with windows blacked out.

Renters who pay their landlords in cash. (Most drug dealers trade exclusively in cash.)

Lots of traffic - people coming and going at unusual times. There may be little traffic during the day, but at night the activity increases dramatically.

Excessive trash including large amounts of items such as: antifreeze containers, lantern fuel cans, red chemically stained coffee filters, drain cleaner and duct tape.

Unusual amounts of clear glass containers being brought into the home.

Windows blacked out or covered by aluminum foil, plywood, sheets, blankets, etc.

Secretive / protective area surrounding the residence (like video cameras, alarm systems, guard dogs, reinforced doors, electrified fencing).

Persons exiting the structure to smoke

Little traffic during the day, but high traffic at late hours; including different vehicles arriving and staying for short periods of time.

Little or no mail, furniture, visible trash and no newspaper delivery.

Presence of the following items could indicate the existence of a meth lab:

Alcohol
Ether
Benzene
Toluene/Paint Thinner
Freon
Acetone
Chloroform
Camp Stove Fuel/Coleman Fuel
Starting Fluid
Anhydrous Ammonia
"Heet"
White Gasoline
Phenyl-2-Propane
Phenylacetone
Phenylpropanolamine
Iodine Crystals
Red Phosphorous
Black Iodine
Lye (Red Devil Lye)
Drano
Muriatic/Hydrochloric Acid
Battery Acid/Sulfuric Acid
Epsom Salts
Batteries/Lithium
Sodium Metal
Wooden Matches
Propane Cylinders
Hot Plates
Ephedrine (over-the-counter)
Cold Tablets
Bronchodialators
Energy Boosters
Rock Salt
Diet Aids

Oh, CRAP~!!! I read that list above and have about 17 of those items at MY house! That does it!!! No more paintin', grillin' out, or polishin' my nails~

BTW - does anyone recall just HOW the meth thing started....? I mean - who came up with it - where did it originate - etc? I'm sure I've watched some kind of educational program about it, but just don't remember (ain't THAT a big surprise... )

Anyway - I've seen it destroy TOO MANY around these parts - including a good friend.

I just pray (a LOT) that my own boys won't ever be "tempted" by that crap. VERY SCARY!!

I screen them all before hiring, you have to when there is very expensive and dangerous heavy equipment involved, and one day they just pop up positive and then retest positive.

Yup, I know the feeling too. Hired a carpenter from a halfway house (mistake 1) , his sponsor said they administer drug test twice a month. Anyway, the guy did excellent job and was at the job site first in last out basis, one night he calls me and asks for an advance for the land lord, I was far away and couldn't make it, that same night he walked back to the job site, broke a window and took about 7k worth of hand tools to a pawn shop around the corner, (I found them there couple a days later). Cops took a report and didn't do anything to get the guy even though I provided them with an Itenerary from Grey hound, phone records, mug shot from their own database, which they asked me if I was sure that was the guy (?) and some other info.
Funny part is that the pawn shop owner told me that the guy had been pawning tools almost every day and usually claimed them back the next
day. That's while I was paying him to get my own tools back.

No more second chances in my company...
