Default VHF radio question

Is there a specific VHF radio that I can purchase and have you install the necessary frequency chips so I can monitor VHF channels # 29 - # 33? If so, please advise which radio I would have to purchase and what the additional cost would be to have these channels installed on the radio prior to it shipping to me. I haven't decided if I want a fixed unit or a hand held so please advise on both.

Once the channels are installed will I be able to transmit as well as receive?

Please advise.

Thanks,
Russ

I have already called Russ to explain this but I wanted to post a reply so anyone else interested would know the answer.

Basically, we do not actually program the units for these channels. However, if you call us and let us know which frequency you want those channels programmed under, we can have the manufacturer program it for you and drop ship it. I believe Standard Horizon and Icom both charge $25 to do this. Another way to get this is to go to a local dealer which will probably have the software and the cable and they can actually program the radio for you. We used to program the radios as well but since we now ship out of a larger warehouse in North Carolina we do not have any of our technical guys there to do this any more. Feel free to contact me for any additional information on this subject or anything else.

Thanks,

Steven
I've been unable to find anyone local that knows how to program a VHF radio. If I were to order a Standard Horizon or an Icom fixed mount VHF and I want them to program the radio for channels #29 - # 36 which radios could I pick from to purchase and what would the total cost be including the $25 programming charge? How long would it take to ship the reprogrammed radio to me? My main VHF radio didn't survive the winter so now I am going to need one ASAP.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Russ

Russ,

Per our phone conversation the unit we spoke about was the Standard Horizon GX3000s Matrix VHF. This is our item number 400173 and is $154.99. The two cables you will need are our item 481176 which is $24.09 and 481177 which is $35.09. The tech from standard will then email me the software for which ever unit you decide to go with. Just give me a call or send me an email when you decide. I look forward to hearing from you!

Steven
I've had other boat issues to I've put the marine radio on the back of the "to do" list.

I tried pulling up the cable part numbers on your website but they are not found. I'm OK with paying the money for the radio but I can't justify spending $60+ bucks for cables I will probably never use again. I was hoping to see what the cables look like to see if I may already have one or the other or if I can use them for something else.

I've got cables for camera's, camcorder, and several GPS's so I'm hoping I may have one of these cables already.

Can you show me the cable ends so I can see if I have one of them?

Russ

Carjunkie: If you don't know what those channels do, then it's very likely you do not need them The channels are for authorized use only and most end users will never need them.

Russ: I assure you that the cables you have in your possession will very likely not work, and if you try them they could very well damage the unit!

Let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks, have a great weekend guys!
